Jatamansi in Sanskrit; (Nardostachys jatamansi), botanical name; Indian Spikenard in English also called nard, nardin, and muskroot is a flowering plant of the Valerian family that grows in the Himalayas of Nepal, China, and India. It is used in the manufacture of an intensely aromatic amber-colored essential oil. The oil has, since ancient times, been used as a perfume, also as a medicine and is mentioned in Biblical history. Indian Spikenard or Jatamansi was one of the early aromatics used by the ancient Egyptians, in Israel and has also been used historically by wealthy Roman women in perfumes and beauty preparations.

Indian Spikenard is an aromatic rhizome. The botanical name has its roots in the Hindu word Jatamansi, which means, “dreadlock of hair”, due to the roots appearance. “The plant grows to about 1 m in height and has pink, bell-shaped flowers. It is found in the altitude of about 3000–5000 meters. Indian Spikenard rhizomes (underground stems) can be crushed and distilled into an intensely aromatic amber-colored essential oil, which is very thick in consistency. Nard oil is used as a perfume, incense, a sedative, and an herbal medicine said to fight insomnia, birth difficulties, and other minor ailments.”¹ It’s also been used for centuries to promote hair growth and to eliminate gray hair and maintain natural hair color.
