Flower Power for Hair Care from an Ancient Tree

Bedda Nut Tree is the English translation for the plant called, Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb. In botanical studies. In traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine, it’s called, Behada or Beleric; also known as "Bibhitaki" (Marathi: Behada), (Terminalia belerica) and numerous other names. It’s been used since ancient times for all sorts of physical ailments and hair care.

“Terminalia bellirica is a large deciduous tree to 50 m tall and a diameter of 3 m with a rounded crown. The frequently buttressed bole at the base is branchless up to 20 m. The bark is bluish or ashy-grey covered with numerous fine longitudinal cracks, the inner bark yellowish. The generic name ‘Terminalia’ comes from Latin word ‘terminus’ or ‘terminalis’ (ending), and refers to the habit of the leaves being crowded or borne on the tips of the shoots.

The species flowers in October-November and fruits in November-December. The tree sheds leaves in November with young ones appearing together with flowers. Animals eat fruits, thus dispersing the seeds. It is frequently found in monsoon forests, mixed deciduous forests or dry deciduous dipterocarp forests, associated with teak.”1
According to Mansfield's Encyclopedia of Agricultural and Horticultural Crops: (Except Ornamentals), Behada (Terminalia bellirica) is:

"Cultivated everywhere in India because of its fruits and the tannin-rich bark. The fruits are a source of black dyes and ink, and of myrobalm, which is used for tanning. Seeds are used for the production of hair oil and soap. Good timber. Kernels (shouldn’t be eaten, due to being possible) toxic or narcotic."2
