5 Natural Hair Care Tips that Work for Everybody. #3 is My Fave!

5 Natural Hair Care Tips that Work for Everybody. #3 is My Fave! -by L.J. O'Neal.1. Physical Exercise for Natural Hair Care

Our serotonin levels in the brain are increased with proper physical exercise and that makes us happy. When we’re happy, we feel a sense of balance and wellbeing. Our entire body feels the effects of regular physical exercise, along with a healthy diet, including our hair follicles. If our regular physical exercise routine includes cardio and aerobic activity, cortisone can be reduced in our bodies, thus promoting hair growth.

2.  Keep Hydrated internally

Drink plenty of water. Nourish your hair like you nourish your skin. In other words, eat a healthy diet rich in hydrating fruits and vegetables. This will help to keep your hair soft and lustrous. Hydrate for proper skin care and hair care.

3. Healthy Hair Care from a Healthy Diet

While 100% natural herbal hair care products are a great help to grow and maintain lustrous, radiant hair –adding a routine of healthy eating will further benefit your hair care efforts. Work on growing healthier and stronger cells through diet.

Make sure your body receives and produces keratin naturally by healthy eating: protein-rich foods like nuts, seeds, low fat dairy products, lean meats, fish and egg whites.

Healthy hair needs essential fatty acids such as omega-3 found in fatty fish like salmon. However, other healthy foods rich in omega-3 include flaxseeds, walnuts, winter squash, beans and olive oil.

Vitamins are absolutely crucial for healthy hair care and growth. Sure, you can take a multi-vitamin, but it is better to eat a healthy diet filled with nutrient-rich foods for healthy hair.  Healthy hair requires a good supply of B-complex vitamins (that include folic acid, biotin, vitamin B-12), Vitamin A sources, zinc and copper for nourishment of a healthy scalp.

4.  Have a Consistent Natural Hair Care Routine

Having a regular natural hair care routine is absolutely essential for healthy hair condition and growth. It needn’t cost a lot of money or even too much time, once you get the hang of it.  Daily, weekly and monthly healthy hair routine.

5. Natural Hair Care Loves Daily Scalp Massage

Why is scalp massage important in our hair care? When you increase circulation to your scalp, blood flows freely and allows nutrients to reach your hair follicles, which usually leads to hair growth.  Only 10 minutes of scalp massage (twice a day) are needed (morning/night) and a daily consistent routine.

Face Mask and Body Mask Skin Treatment to Pamper You

Face Mask Skin Treatment by Lustrous Henna to Pamper You. -by L.J. O'Neal.Use a Face Mask Skin Treatment to Pamper Your Skin

“There are different kinds of facial masks… for different purposes: deep-cleansing, by penetrating the pores; healing acne scars or hyper-pigmentation; brightening, for a gradual illumination of the skin tone. Some masks are designed to dry or solidify on the face, almost like plaster; others just remain wet. The perceived effects of facial masks (treatment) include revitalizing, healing, or refreshing; and, may yield temporary or long-term benefits (depending on environmental, dietary, and other skincare factors).

Facial masks are removed by either rinsing the face with water, wiping off with a damp cloth, or peeling off of the face by hand. Duration for wearing a mask varies with the type of mask, and manufacturer's usage instructions. The time can range from a few minutes to overnight. Those with sensitive skin are advised to first test out the mask on a small portion of the skin, in order to check for any irritations.”1

“The Face and Body mask is hands down my favorite product. Many of you know that I’m a spa brat. You can rub me down with just about anything at a spa- mud, seaweed, chocolate, blueberries- I’ve done it all.

This is one of the best facial masks I have ever tried. It mixes with water and apply the paste. I left it on for about an hour and then washed off. You can feel it tightening on your face and your face just lifting. It is the cheapest facelift you will ever get! After I washed it off I noticed an immediate glow and smoothness to my face. My skin seemed to be much more even-shaded and just wonderful. And, since I only used it on my face, I only used needed a small amount of the package. So... I could get 3-4 facials; that is my idea of home economics!”

Hair Growth with Healthy Exercise Techniques (Part 2 of 2)

Hair Growth with Healthy Exercise Techniques -by L.J. O'Neal Healthy Hair Growth: Exercise Your Hair

What is ‘Hair Exercise? Hair Exercise is a simple phrase I coined (at least, I think I made it up) to describe exercise you do that increases blood flow to the scalp and helps reduce neck strain. It's specific physical exercise targeted for the head. Why is ‘Hair Exercise’ important? It gradually improves blood circulation and nourishment to hair roots, thus promoting hair growth.

‘Hair Exercise’ Examples

Yoga postures can help promote hair growth. Try out a few:

Yoga Postures to Prevent Hair Loss

Neck rolls: While sitting upright, gently bend your head to your chest, then roll to your shoulder, your back, opposite shoulder, returning to your chest. Do this three times. Next, roll your head in the opposite direction for three more times. With your chin on your chest, take a deep cleansing breath, and then exhale.

Waist bend: Keep legs slightly apart; bend over gently and lean forward until your head is below waist level; gently massage your scalp for about thirty seconds. Rise up and massage your scalp again in a standing position.

Hair Growth with Healthy Exercise Techniques (Part 1 of 2)

Hair Growth with Healthy Exercise Techniques (Part 1 of 2) -by L.J. O'NealHealthy Hair Growth: ‘Exercise’ Your Scalp with Scalp Massage

Why is scalp massage important for hair growth? When you increase circulation to your scalp, blood flows freely and allows nutrients to reach your hair follicles, which usually leads to hair growth.

Basic Scalp Massage

  • Beginning with the top of your forehead, use your fingertips and gently rub your hairline, forming little circles. Continue the circular massage along the sides toward the back of your head.
  • Massage in the small circular motion from the back nape of your neck up to the crown of your head, ending in the front -where you started.
  • Only 10 minutes of scalp massage (twice a day) are needed (morning/night) and a daily consistent routine.
Conditioning Massage
  • Beat 2 eggs with 2 tablespoons of water. Apply to WET hair. While egg mixture is on your hair, perform the basic circular scalp massage. Leave mixture on for another 10-15 minutes. Rinse hair with lukewarm water, followed by Lustrous Henna Dry Shampoo Powder (made into a paste). Cover hair with plastic cap.  Leave shampoo powder on hair for 5 minutes and rinse out. This will help prevent dandruff and hair loss.
  • Soak two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water at bedtime. In the morning, grind up the softened seeds into a paste. Apply paste to scalp and hair. Cover with plastic cap for 30 minutes. Rinse out paste. Follow up with Pure Shikakai Powder or Pure Reetha Powder Organic Wash. End with basic scalp massage (above).
Healthy Hair Growth: Exercise Your Soul
(Learn To Relax And De-Stress)

Why is ‘relaxation exercise’ important for hair growth? Undue stress can cause hair loss and stop hair growth, if not eliminated (or at least, controlled). One simple way to reduce stress with breathing exerciseBreathing exercise such as diaphragmatic breathing are extremely beneficial to the body.  Diaphragmatic breathing is not only is a way to reduce stress, which in turn can stop hair loss, but it gives you energy! This type of breathing improves the body’s ability to relax by strengthening the diaphragm and abdominal muscles. It also improves lung function. Try it and you will be able to practice diaphragmatic breathing just about anywhere –even at work.

Breathing Exercises help hair growth. www.sababotanical.com
Diaphragmatic Breathing Exercise

A common diaphragmatic breathing exercise is as follows:
  1. Sit or lie comfortably, with loose garments.
  2. Put one hand on your chest and one on your stomach.
  3. Slowly inhale through your nose.
  4. Exhale through pursed lips to slow down the exhalation and try to slowly release most air out of the body.
  5. Repeat previous two steps.

Henna Hair Dye -A Natural Hair Dye Approach for Sufferers

Henna Hair Dye -A Natural Hair Dye Approach for Sufferers -by L.J. O'Neal, writer.Henna Hair Dye -A Natural Hair Dye Approach

Recently I was reviewing the statements of a number of sufferers from chemical hair dye allergies.  What they seem to desire the most are hair dye allergy alternatives. Henna is a recommended natural hair dye approach and the best way to avoid suffering from hair dye allergies. Take a look:

J.J. hair dye allergy. www.sababotanical.comHair Dye Allergy Alternatives

–Sufferers’ Requests
  • “Yes. I had a reaction so bad I had to go on antibiotics. The lymph nodes in my scalp got infected and I didn't even know there were lymph nodes in my scalp! This was from a salon color and I'm partly to blame because I was having escalating reactions each time I had it done, while it was still on my head I could feel it burning, and just tried to ignore it until it blew up on me.”
  • “I went through a particularly bad series of hair dye jobs, which resulted in unbearable itching (to the point where I scratched so hard I bled!) then my face got swollen around the hairline, my ear lobes were swollen. I was a mess. I can't believe that our government has not followed Europe in banning PPD from these hair dyes.”
  •  “I had a severe reaction to salon hair color in February. I had been experiencing some burning during application and itching with sores for a couple of months. But in February all heck broke loose. I had been coloring for over 20 years. This was not a new hair color being used on me.  According to my dermatologist, there are many ingredients in hair color which can cause a serious reaction whether it contains PPD or not. And someone can have an allergic reaction to any one of them suddenly, even after years of coloring using the same product. Her advice to me was to stop coloring, which I did. The last thing I wanted was to end up in the ER with anaphylactic shock.”1

Note the following statements about hair dye allergies from the Baylor College of Medicine:

Allergic Reactions To Hair Dye Can Happen At Any Time,
“Dyeing hair seems to come naturally to many people as they age, but it could be the cause of an allergic reaction, no matter how long you've been using the same product, according to a dermatologist at Baylor College of Medicine.
‘You can develop an allergy to a product at any point in time,’ said Dr. Rajani Katta, professor of dermatology at BCM. ‘One allergic reaction we're seeing commonly is to hair dyes.’
The symptoms of hair dye allergies aren't necessarily immediate, she said. They can occur two, three or even up to seven days after exposure to the product.”2

Henna Hair Dye -A Natural Hair Dye Approach for Sufferers -by L.J. O'Neal, writer.Hair Dye Allergy Alternatives

There is no doubt that a natural hair dye alternative is an absolute necessity for sufferers from chemical hair dye allergies. As hair dye allergy is on the increase, especially from the dangerous chemical p-Phenylenediamine (PPD or PPDA), this demand for natural hair dye is also on the rise.
Thankfully, a natural hair dye has been in existence for literally centuries. Henna hair dye has been recommended worldwide by dermatologists and the FDA in the United States. Another natural hair dye that combines only botanical ingredients combined with henna has been satisfying the needs of former sufferers for years. Lustrous Henna is pure henna hair dye that comes in a pre-mixed dry powder (in a variety of natural hair shades), with an easier and quicker application process than traditional henna hair dye.
Whether you choose traditional pure henna hair dye or quick application Lustrous Henna, you can say "Good-bye" to hair dye allergies. Allergy to henna is extremely rare, but just to be sure, always test a small area before applying.
Avoid the sad consequences from chemical hair dye allergy -GO NATURAL!

Frizzy Hair and Curly Hair Can Be Controlled Year-Round

Frizzy Hair and Curly Hair Can Be Controlled

Frizzy hair and curly hair is usually dry hair because it’s easier for the natural oils in the scalp to run down the hair shaft if the hair is straight. Curly hair loves creamy, ultra-moisturizing hair conditioner.  For a CO-Wash (Conditioner –Only Wash), rinse hair with water, then add hair conditioner to the wet hair, wait, then rinse out gently. Use a monthly hot oil treatment. If you suffer from extra-dry hair, every 2 weeks use an intense moisturizing treatment.

Avoid Dehydrating Frizzy Hair

Curly hair and frizzy hair hate excessive heat! Avoid everything that causes dryness to the hair like blow dryers, flat irons or curling irons. Don’t dehydrate the hair by washing it every day. It will look frizzy and out of control. Follow sulfate-free shampoo with a good moisturizing hair conditioner like So Natural™ Nurturing Conditioner Let your curls dry naturally.

Frizzy Hair and Curly Hair Can Be Controlled Year-Round. L.J. O'Neal, writer
Frizzy Hair and Curly Hair Can Be Controlled Year-Round. L.J. O'Neal, writer
Moisturize and Protect Frizzy Hair

Your curly hair also needs to be hydrated regularly in order to maintain its healthy appearance.
  • On your damp hair, use your hands to apply hair conditioner liberally from roots to ends then comb your conditioner-soaked hair (using a wide-tooth comb) from ends to roots –gently. If desired, you can use a 'Denman-style' plastic/rubber bristle hair brush to gently brush hair.
  • Don’t brush dry hair: Avoid damaging the cuticle; stretching and breaking hair.
  • If needed, use wet fingers to ‘comb’ your hair and gently detangle.
  • For spot conditioning, Add plenty of water to your hair conditioner in a spray bottle.  Spray on ends of hair and use fingertips to gently work in.
  • In addition to hair conditioner, add a little natural oil to your hair to seal in moisture.

Flower Power for Your Hair: Jatamansi,(Indian Spikenard)

Flower Power for Your Hair: Jatamansi,(Indian Spikenard)

Flower Power for Hair Care -with Jatamansi (Nardostychys Jatmansi), Indian Spikenard

Jatamansi in Sanskrit; (Nardostachys jatamansi), botanical name; Indian Spikenard in English also called nard, nardin, and muskroot is a flowering plant of the Valerian family that grows in the Himalayas of Nepal, China, and India. It is used in the manufacture of an intensely aromatic amber-colored essential oil. The oil has, since ancient times, been used as a perfume, also as a medicine and is mentioned in Biblical history. Indian Spikenard or Jatamansi was one of the early aromatics used by the ancient Egyptians, in Israel and has also been used historically by wealthy Roman women in perfumes and beauty preparations.

Indian Spikenard is an aromatic rhizome. The botanical name has its roots in the Hindu word Jatamansi, which means, “dreadlock of hair”, due to the roots appearance. “The plant grows to about 1 m in height and has pink, bell-shaped flowers. It is found in the altitude of about 3000–5000 meters. Indian Spikenard rhizomes (underground stems) can be crushed and distilled into an intensely aromatic amber-colored essential oil, which is very thick in consistency. Nard oil is used as a perfume, incense, a sedative, and an herbal medicine said to fight insomnia, birth difficulties, and other minor ailments.”It’s also been used for centuries to promote hair growth and to eliminate gray hair and maintain natural hair color.

Flower Power for Your Hair from the Bedda Nut Tree

Bedda Nut Tree, Behada Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb. Flower Power for Hair Care by L.J. O'Neal.

Flower Power for Hair Care from an Ancient Tree

Bedda Nut Tree is the English translation for the plant called, Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb. In botanical studies. In traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine, it’s called, Behada or Beleric; also known as "Bibhitaki" (Marathi: Behada), (Terminalia belerica) and numerous other names. It’s been used since ancient times for all sorts of physical ailments and hair care.

“Terminalia bellirica is a large deciduous tree to 50 m tall and a diameter of 3 m with a rounded crown. The frequently buttressed bole at the base is branchless up to 20 m. The bark is bluish or ashy-grey covered with numerous fine longitudinal cracks, the inner bark yellowish. The generic name ‘Terminalia’ comes from Latin word ‘terminus’ or ‘terminalis’ (ending), and refers to the habit of the leaves being crowded or borne on the tips of the shoots.

The species flowers in October-November and fruits in November-December. The tree sheds leaves in November with young ones appearing together with flowers. Animals eat fruits, thus dispersing the seeds. It is frequently found in monsoon forests, mixed deciduous forests or dry deciduous dipterocarp forests, associated with teak.”1
According to Mansfield's Encyclopedia of Agricultural and Horticultural Crops: (Except Ornamentals), Behada (Terminalia bellirica) is:

"Cultivated everywhere in India because of its fruits and the tannin-rich bark. The fruits are a source of black dyes and ink, and of myrobalm, which is used for tanning. Seeds are used for the production of hair oil and soap. Good timber. Kernels (shouldn’t be eaten, due to being possible) toxic or narcotic."2

Behada (Terminalia bellirica) Flower Power and Hair

Bedda Nut Tree (Terminalia bellirica) fruit when ripen, has been taken internally for a variety of medical conditions. However, for hair care, it’s known as:
  •  A powerful rejuvenative herb that nourishes the hair.
  • The seed oil gives excellent results in premature graying of hair.
  • ts fruits and kernels are used in making medicated hair oil, with antiseptic properties for the scalp, boosts hair growth and imparts black color to the hair.
