Hair Loss Reversal and Prevention -from Your Diet

Although some hair loss is genetic, e.g. male or female pattern baldness, most hair loss is due to other causes.
  • Hair treatments or styles that cause damage to hair (i.e. chemical treatments and dyes).
  • Twisting or pulling hair.
  • Extreme braiding or applying hair extensions too tight, causing hairline and other areas to thin or break off.
  • Prescription drugs such as blood thinners and medications for gout, arthritis, depression, heart problems and high blood pressure
  • Thyroid disease.
  • Iron deficiency. (Do not take iron unless you've been tested and your doctor has recommended a supplement - it can do more harm than good if you don't need it.)

Nutritional changes can promote hair growth and prevent further hair loss. You can obtain most of these from the foods you eat. If taking supplements, do not overdo it, since overuse can cause other health problems.
  • Include omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. for hair growth try to eat salmon (preferable wild Alaskan salmon), sardines, herring or mackerel two or three times a week. Or, sprinkle two tablespoons of freshly ground flaxseeds per day on your cereal or salads, or eat walnuts.
  • Supplement your diet with the essential omega-6 fatty acid called GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) in the form of black currant oil or evening primrose oil, available in capsules or soft gels at health food stores. Take 500 mg of either twice a day. Be patient with this one. You won't see results for six to eight weeks.
  • Minerals that strengthen the hair shaft: calcium, selenium and silicon (silica).
  • Minerals that stimulates hair growth: manganese and zinc.
  • Minerals needed that help prevent hair loss: iron (deficiency can cause hair loss), iodine (regulates thyroid hormone -affects hair growth).
  • Vitamin that strengthen the hair shaft: vitamin B-7, vitamin A (retinol).
  • Vitamins that stimulates hair growth: vitamins B-1 (thiamin), B-2 (riboflavin), B-3 (niacin), B-5 (pantothenic acid), B-6 (pyridoxine), B-9 (folic acid), B-12 (cobalamin), vitamin E.

According to Dr. Mehmet Oz (Dr. Oz) you can “repair your weak, brittle hair with black currant oil. Culled from black currant seeds, this oil contains a particular type of fat, GLA that helps strengthen hair and decrease breakage. Take 500 mg twice a day or add 5 drops to a glass of water.”  

Available as gel caps, look for black currant oil capsules containing at least 45 mg of GLA. Avoid topical oil preparations. Adults can take 500 mg. of black currant oil, twice per day to promote hair growth.
