Hair dye is usually ‘brewed’ and packaged with a developer… most often based on hydrogen peroxide, with the addition of small amounts of other chemicals depending on the manufacturer.” – See “How Products Are Made”, Vol. 3. Hair Dye. (For full article)
Most hair dye ‘brew’ includes toxic combinations of para-phenylenediamine (PPD), Resorcinol, Ammonia and Hydrogen Peroxide. Now add coal tar and lead acetate.
Why coal tar in hair dye? It darkens the hair and is very cheap to manufacture. However, it also triggers serious allergic reaction as it is easily absorbed into the skin. It’s labeled as hazardous by the FDA.
Lead acetate is an extremely harmful ingredient and is used commonly in progressive hair dye. You know the ones that change your hair color gradually. Men, are you paying attention? In addition to causing allergic reaction, the European Union has banned its use at cosmetic counters and the state of California has listed it as a potential carcinogen.
In general, hair dye include: dyes, modifiers, antioxidants, alkalizers, soaps, ammonia, wetting agents, fragrance, and a variety of other chemicals …that impart special qualities to hair (such as softening the texture) or give a desired action to the dye (such as making it more or less permanent). No wonder that many individuals experience serious allergic reaction from using synthetic hair dye.
Other possible causes of allergic reaction: chemicals used in hair dyes act as modifiers, which stabilize the dye pigments or otherwise act to modify the shade. Antioxidants protect the dye from oxidizing with air. Most commonly used is sodium sulfite. Alkalizers are added to change the pH of the dye formula, because the dyes work best in a highly alkaline composition. Ammonium hydroxide is a common alkalizer.
Happily, alternative chemical-free solutions exist and hopefully are implemented by all desiring to color their hair naturally and avoid serious allergic reaction. As the following testimonial shows: natural ingredients simply ‘taste’ better.
A few months ago I was diagnosed with Lymphoma at Mayo Clinic with follow up 3 mos. visits to a Hematologist, blood specialist there. I then began to think about changing some of my lifestyle habits and a NATURAL Hair Color was an easy one to change. I am not on chemo since my Dr. says my own immune system is trying to fight this cancer. Chemo kills the good & the bad, therefore I'm thankful I do still have my hair at this time.
My friend introduced me to Lustrous Henna when I complemented her hair. I didn't even know she used any type of color on it, because it looked so natural. She ordered my first time with her order to try it out. So I have twice now, due to shorter hair. So glad I heard about this henna from her!
I am thankful for the Lustrous Henna's shorter process time compared to others that require an extremely longer process and it leaves my hair in much, much better condition than when I did salon color.
My single priority, due to my health issue is that it's safe, plus it looks and feels so natural and healthy. I can't say enough good about it.
It was my pleasure to visit with Syed a few days ago about Lustrous Henna. His patience and very informative manner is so helpful and refreshing. He is an asset to Lustrous Henna products. He helped me a great deal with tips on how to tone the gray as it grows in from my root line. I sincerely thank you, Syed and Lustrous Henna for the difference you have made in my life. I'll be ordering again soon.
Warmest Regards,
Twyla R. Greene IA
