5 Natural Hair Care Oil Treatments from Your Kitchen

5 Natural Hair Care Oil Treatments from Your Kitchen by L.J. O’Neal, writer. From the Kitchen: Natural Hair Care Oil Treatments

Did you know that natural herbal oils you probably already use for skin care are known to help protect, strengthen, regrow hair and eliminate dandruff? They’re easy to apply, and most can be found right on your kitchen pantry shelves. When used along with other natural botanical powders, they can make a real difference in your rate of hair growth in just a few short months. So, use these helpful oils for natural hair care maintenance.

Almond Oil contains fatty acids that are essential in natural hair care maintenance. It helps to grow and strengthen hair, while adding suppleness to healthy hair. Try a simple scalp massage with about a tablespoon of almond oil. Continue the gentle massage to ends of hair; let rest for about 15 minutes, then use cool water and rinse hair. Follow with an all natural shampoo powder. Depending on condition of hair, repeat this treatment once or twice a week.

Black Cumin Oil (Black Seed Oil):

Black Cumin Seeds are believed to be one of the most powerful healing natural medicines available to mankind; widely used by people belonging to India, Egypt and countries in Middle East since ancient times. Though very tiny in nature, the seeds have about 100 chemical compounds (including vitamins, proteins, fatty acids, carbohydrates, minerals, etc) and some are not yet identified.

Black Cumin seeds are different from Cumin seeds (botanical name is Cuminum cyminum), although both look similar. However, Black Cumin seeds are black in colour unlike cumin seeds. The oil extracted from the seeds is called as Black Cumin oil. The other names include black seed oil or black oil.

Hair growth treatment: After bathing, mix a small quantity of black seed oil and olive oil and apply it to the scalp (or the bald portion of your head). This is known to promote hair growth.

Clove Oil

Clove has been used in ancient Indian and Chinese civilizations for its rich in minerals such as calcium, hydrochloric acid, iron, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, and vitamin A and vitamin C. Clove oil is antiseptic and one of the strongest natural antioxidants ever tested. Eugenol is the active ingredient in clove essential oil that causes stimulation of blood circulation, which makes it one of the best support for hair growth stimulation. Please be extremely careful when applying this very strong oil, as it must be diluted before application.

5 Natural Hair Care Oil Treatments from Your Kitchen by L.J. O’Neal, writer. Virgin Coconut Oil

Virgin coconut oil is unadulterated and free of chemical or other additives. Virgin Coconut oil is an excellent pre-shampoo treatment because it not only coats the hair, it penetrates the hair shaft.

Coconut oil has been used to promote hair growth, literally, for centuries. Protein loss is reduced and hair is protected from drying and breaking due to the medium chain triglycerides (MCT) contain within coconut oil. This is also a substance that is contained in sebum (an oily substance secreted from the sebaceous glands that keep the scalp moist). The scalp contains ‘friendly’ bacteria that break down the MCT into free fatty acids.  This is what provides protection against scalp problems such as dandruff and head lice. The oil also adds a radiant sheen to the hair.

Hair Growth TIP: Boil together some fresh curry leaves and coconut oil just until black residue forms (don’t fry leaves; gently boil). Turn off the heat and harvest the black residue. When cool enough, apply to your hair. Use once a week (or twice a week for damaged hair). This is an ancient Indian recipe used to help hair grow faster and reduce gray hair.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)

Extra virgin olive oil improves hair health. Being rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, olive oil nourishes the hair. It is a natural conditioner and great for healthy hair shine. The emollient contained within olive oil improves hair strength, thus enabling it to grow by, stopping hair fall and breakage.  Hair elasticity also increases. An olive oil scalp massage is a wonderful stress reducer.

Why Extra-Virgin or Virgin Olive Oil for Hair?

Extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) comes from virgin olive oil production only, contains no more than 0.8% acidity (smell is not as pungent).  Virgin olive oil comes from virgin oil production only, has acidity of less than 2.

Note: Oils labeled as “Pure Olive Oil” or Olive Oil” are of poor quality; usually a blend of refined and virgin production oil. Per Wikipedia: “Over 50% of the oil produced in the Mediterranean area is of such poor quality that it must be refined … Note that no solvents have been used to extract the oil, but it has been refined with the use of charcoal and other chemical and physical filters.”

The next time you need a hot oil treatment for natural hair care, look no further than your kitchen pantry for radiant, healthy hair.
