5 Natural Hair Care Oil Treatments from Your Kitchen

5 Natural Hair Care Oil Treatments from Your Kitchen by L.J. O’Neal, writer. From the Kitchen: Natural Hair Care Oil Treatments

Did you know that natural herbal oils you probably already use for skin care are known to help protect, strengthen, regrow hair and eliminate dandruff? They’re easy to apply, and most can be found right on your kitchen pantry shelves. When used along with other natural botanical powders, they can make a real difference in your rate of hair growth in just a few short months. So, use these helpful oils for natural hair care maintenance.

Almond Oil contains fatty acids that are essential in natural hair care maintenance. It helps to grow and strengthen hair, while adding suppleness to healthy hair. Try a simple scalp massage with about a tablespoon of almond oil. Continue the gentle massage to ends of hair; let rest for about 15 minutes, then use cool water and rinse hair. Follow with an all natural shampoo powder. Depending on condition of hair, repeat this treatment once or twice a week.

Black Cumin Oil (Black Seed Oil):

Black Cumin Seeds are believed to be one of the most powerful healing natural medicines available to mankind; widely used by people belonging to India, Egypt and countries in Middle East since ancient times. Though very tiny in nature, the seeds have about 100 chemical compounds (including vitamins, proteins, fatty acids, carbohydrates, minerals, etc) and some are not yet identified.

Black Cumin seeds are different from Cumin seeds (botanical name is Cuminum cyminum), although both look similar. However, Black Cumin seeds are black in colour unlike cumin seeds. The oil extracted from the seeds is called as Black Cumin oil. The other names include black seed oil or black oil.

Hair growth treatment: After bathing, mix a small quantity of black seed oil and olive oil and apply it to the scalp (or the bald portion of your head). This is known to promote hair growth.

Clove Oil

Clove has been used in ancient Indian and Chinese civilizations for its rich in minerals such as calcium, hydrochloric acid, iron, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, and vitamin A and vitamin C. Clove oil is antiseptic and one of the strongest natural antioxidants ever tested. Eugenol is the active ingredient in clove essential oil that causes stimulation of blood circulation, which makes it one of the best support for hair growth stimulation. Please be extremely careful when applying this very strong oil, as it must be diluted before application.

5 Natural Hair Care Oil Treatments from Your Kitchen by L.J. O’Neal, writer. Virgin Coconut Oil

Virgin coconut oil is unadulterated and free of chemical or other additives. Virgin Coconut oil is an excellent pre-shampoo treatment because it not only coats the hair, it penetrates the hair shaft.

Coconut oil has been used to promote hair growth, literally, for centuries. Protein loss is reduced and hair is protected from drying and breaking due to the medium chain triglycerides (MCT) contain within coconut oil. This is also a substance that is contained in sebum (an oily substance secreted from the sebaceous glands that keep the scalp moist). The scalp contains ‘friendly’ bacteria that break down the MCT into free fatty acids.  This is what provides protection against scalp problems such as dandruff and head lice. The oil also adds a radiant sheen to the hair.

Hair Growth TIP: Boil together some fresh curry leaves and coconut oil just until black residue forms (don’t fry leaves; gently boil). Turn off the heat and harvest the black residue. When cool enough, apply to your hair. Use once a week (or twice a week for damaged hair). This is an ancient Indian recipe used to help hair grow faster and reduce gray hair.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)

Extra virgin olive oil improves hair health. Being rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, olive oil nourishes the hair. It is a natural conditioner and great for healthy hair shine. The emollient contained within olive oil improves hair strength, thus enabling it to grow by, stopping hair fall and breakage.  Hair elasticity also increases. An olive oil scalp massage is a wonderful stress reducer.

Why Extra-Virgin or Virgin Olive Oil for Hair?

Extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) comes from virgin olive oil production only, contains no more than 0.8% acidity (smell is not as pungent).  Virgin olive oil comes from virgin oil production only, has acidity of less than 2.

Note: Oils labeled as “Pure Olive Oil” or Olive Oil” are of poor quality; usually a blend of refined and virgin production oil. Per Wikipedia: “Over 50% of the oil produced in the Mediterranean area is of such poor quality that it must be refined … Note that no solvents have been used to extract the oil, but it has been refined with the use of charcoal and other chemical and physical filters.”

The next time you need a hot oil treatment for natural hair care, look no further than your kitchen pantry for radiant, healthy hair.

Natural Hair Care - 10 Treatments from Your Kitchen

Natural Hair Care - 10 Treatments from Your Kitchen by L.J. O’Neal, writer.Natural Hair Care from My Kitchen?

How do you feel eating a delicious meal perfectly seasoned with tasty spices? Yum! Well, figuratively speaking, your hair feels the same way when it’s properly ‘seasoned’. Herbs and spices add to the enhancement of life and to the enjoyment of a full head of healthy hair . You may be surprises to learn that your kitchen pantry might contain spices for healthy natural hair care.
Some of the best treatments for optimal hair growth can be made right at home. The following is just a partial list of herbs, spice and oils that can help maintain healthy hair promoting successful hair growth. You can use them in combination with other Indian herbs and spices without burning a hole in your pocketbook.

Herbs and Spices for Natural Hair Care

Black Pepper (seeds or powder) has been used to get rid of dandruff and promote hair growth.  Hair mask: just a pinch of powder is usually mixed in with yogurt, curds or warmed coconut oil and olive with a teaspoon of lemon juice; the mixture is very gently massaged into the scalp and left overnight twice a week. Be extremely careful when applying this mixture; too much pepper can burn the scalp; also, stay away from the eyes.
Cayenne Pepper contains high amounts of capsaicin that actually stimulates the hair follicles and scalp, thus promoting optimal hair growth.  The blood flow from the roots is increased and adds volume and radiant shine to the hair. Be extremely careful when applying this mixture; too much pepper can burn the scalp; also, stay away from the eyes.
Cinnamon is an ancient spice that’s believed to strengthen the hair roots by improving blood circulation. This helps the scalp and keeps the hair healthy.
Natural Hair Care - 10 Treatments from Your Kitchen by L.J. O’Neal, writer.Curry Leaves have always been known to help in: preventing greying of the hair; treat damaged hair; add bounce to limp hair; strengthen the shaft of thin hair; stop hair loss; treat dandruff. You either choose to include curry leaves in your diet or apply it to your scalp as a remedy.
Tip:  To help strengthen your hair and fight dandruff, add the juice of curry leaves to about ¼ to ½ cup (50-100 ml) of coconut oil. Heat this oil till it turns blackish and apply it to your scalp regularly.
Garlic is a cooking staple in just about every culture. It’s one of the healthiest 'secrets' for hair growth.
It contains vitamin B6, selenium and manganese which are all essential for healthy hair. Additionally, the sulfur compounds it contains can make hair strong and resilient. Eat your way to healthy hair with garlic!
Ginger is a spice from the Far East that is commonly used in cooking. Add it to tasty dishes and keep your hair healthy by benefiting from the great antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that keep blood circulating to your scalp.
Oregano contains thymol and carvacrol which makes it a strong antiseptic; it’s also great for treating dandruff and itchy scalp. Oregano leaves can be simmered in a cup of water; cool and pour in a small spray bottle; to mask the oregano smell, add a teaspoon of pure vanilla (not vanilla extract, since the alcohol can dry hair out).
Rosemary is known to slow down and even prevent hair loss, reduce grays and encourage hair growth.
Due to its antibacterial properties, it can soothe an itchy scalp; as well as cleanse impurities from the hair and scalp. It can be used in hair treatments with apple cider vinegar or plain water; also used in oil treatments.
Sage is another herb that strengthens hair; prevents hair loss; soak up excess natural oils in scalp and promotes clean, shiny, healthy hair . Sage also deepens brown and black hair and covers greys.
Turmeric rapidly increases blood circulation to the scalp, due in part, to its anti-inflammatory properties.
In his book, Indian Spices and Condiments as Natural Healers, Dr H.K Bhakru says, ‘Turmeric is truly one of the marvelous medicinal spices of the world. It has been used by Ayurvedic and Unani practitioners in India from time immemorial. Turmeric is aromatic, stimulant and tonic. It corrects disordered process of nutrition and restores the normal function of the system. It is a carminative, antiseptic, a great anti-flatulent, blood purifier and expectorant.’
Tumeric can be consumed as in foods as a seasoning or by itself (if you dare). However, many simply make turmeric tea: Add a tablespoon of turmeric powder in 4 cups of boiling water; Steep for 10 minutes. Strain with a fine strainer; then mix with honey and lemon.
Turmeric is also that spice that makes curries yellow. It is well known as an ingredient in curries. So, eat up!
The next time you need a quick natural hair care treatment, look no further than your kitchen pantry for healthy hair.

Flower Power for Your Scalp: Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil

Flower Power for Your Scalp: Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil –by L.J. O’Neal, writerAbout the Flower Power of: Ricinus Communis Seed (Castor) Oil

Did you know? The castor oil plant (Ricinus communis) is a species of flowering plant in the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae. It belongs to a monotypicgenus, Ricinus, and subtribe, Ricininae. Its seed is the castor bean, which, despite its name, is not a true bean. Castor is indigenous to the southeastern Mediterranean Basin, Eastern Africa, and India, but is widespread throughout tropical regions (and widely grown elsewhere as an ornamental plant). Castor seed is the source of castor oil, which has a wide variety of uses. The seeds contain between 40% and 60% oil that is rich in triglycerides, mainly ricinolein. The seed contains ricin, a toxin, which is also present in lower concentrations throughout the plant.1

Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil is a natural emollient that penetrates the surface layers of the skin, making it softer and supple. Perfect for dry feet and heels or other excessively dry skin areas. Flower power benefits to the hair and scalp: prevents dry scalp; moisturizes hair and eliminates dry hair; deep conditions hair and scalp; thickens thin hair; prevents and reduces hair breakage and damage; increases hair growth; adds fullness and shine to hair; prevents and stops split ends (when applied on hair ends); stops frizziness; improves hair health.

Ricinus Communis Seed (Castor) Oil:
Hair Care Application

Cold Pressed and Cold Processed Castor oil is very thick and its scent might not be as pleasing to the senses as other oils, but its benefits of its flower power for your scalp and skin will definitely please you. Some prefer to mix it with other oils, to thin out the consistency. You can also choose to do the following.

Flower Power for Your Scalp: Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil –by L.J. O’Neal, writerUse with Natural Botanical Products from Saba Botanical
1.     Oil your scalp with cold processed castor oil to total 2-4 tbsp., depending on scalp area. It's okay to touch the roots but, try to avoid getting castor oil into to the rest of hair (since it can be hard to wash out if entire head is saturated). Gently massage oil into scalp. Do this prior to using Lustrous Henna® Dry Shampoo Powder.

2.     Wrap Hair in plastic wrap/plastic cap and leave oil on for about 30 minutes. If you want a hot oil treatment, add heat for 15-20 minutes. (Some users like to leave the oil on their scalp overnight which is okay, if you desire) Remove with warm water. If oil remains in your hair, no worries: Lustrous Henna® Dry Shampoo will help remove the rest of the oil.

3.     Wet hair again and apply prepared Lustrous Henna® Dry Shampoo Powder paste* to hair with fingertips (a small rubber spatula can aid in application, but not necessary). Making the shampoo paste takes about 30 seconds. Press and lightly massage throughout hair. (follow-up gently-using a large-tooth comb for full coverage). Leave on for 5 minutes, and then rinse out until hair is completely free of shampoo.

4.     There is no need to follow up with a conditioner if you have fine to normal hair. However, if you insist on using a conditioner use Imbue™ Nuturing Conditioner. If you have extremely dry, course or damaged hair, use So Natural™ Moisture Gloss Conditioner from Saba Botanical of USA.

Release the flower power to your scalp and skin. Your healthy hair and body will ‘thank you’ for it!

The Indigo Plant in Natural Hair Dye

The Indigo Plant in Natural Hair Dye -by L.J. O'Neal, writer.

About the Indigo Plant

The indigo plant has been used since ancient times as a natural hair dye. It was used by men and women to dye textiles and hair. The botanical name is Indigofera Tinctoria. Other synonyms are true indigo, pigmentum indicum, neel and neelii. The plant is actually a leafy shrub that grows 3-6 feet tall with magenta-colored flowers.

Indigo dye is made from processing the plant’s leaves by soaking them in water and allowing them to ferment. This converts the natural glycoside indicant into the dye, indigotin. It can then be pressed into cakes, dried and powdered; then used in natural hair dye.

How Pure Indigo Powder is used by Today’s Consumers

“If you want black hair and absolutely brilliant coverage of gray, you need indigo. I dye my hair first with henna soft black and then use indigo. I have a lot of gray and the coverage is awesome. Really great results!!! My order only took a few days to ship. Saba-Botanical puts out a great product and is a very reliable company! I highly recommend it.” – Z. W., Bayonne, NJ., USA
“I mixed a little of this in with the Henna Soft black to get my hair just a wee bit darker. I like this too.” – N. H. in Pennsylvania, USA

“The indigo makes my black hair shiny and gives it a somewhat bluish purple hue depending on the lighting. I love it!” – Maria O., Broken Arrow, OK., USA

“It’s great. I mix it with Henna for my beard and mustache.” – Jorge F., Hatillo, Puerto Rico.

“Wonderful for preventing black hair from fading! I bought this and used it with the lustrous Henna in soft black. I love the shade of black this gave me! I have a bluish/purplish hue of black from using this! As a person who loved dying her hair a blue black I am extremely satisfied with the results! I will continue to buy this product. No more dangerous PPD products for me no more!” Sarah in California, USA

The Indigo Plant in Natural Hair Dye -by L.J. O'Neal, writer. The Indigo Plant as Natural Hair Dye

As mentioned previously, the green leaves of the indigo plant are dried, crushed and powdered. When used properly with pure henna, indigo dye will create shades ranging from brown to intensely black hair . It also makes hair soft and silky to the touch.

Pure henna powder and the crushed leaves of the indigo plant have been used for centuries to make a jet black henna hair dye. Both are currently available for anyone desiring brown or black hair from a natural hair dye made in the traditional manner.

The Indian fruit, Reetha, contains natural soap. Soapnuts, Soapberries are given this common name because the fruit pulp is used to make soap. The generic name is derived from the Latin words saponis, meaning “soap,” and indicus, meaning “of India.”

Hair Growth through Nourishment and Healthy Hair Maintenance

Hair Growth through Nourishment and Healthy Hair Maintenance -by L.J. O'Neal, writer.

Keep Your Hair Growth!

If we stop the care, we can lose our hair.” You probably know that I say this a lot. Don't be the blame for your hair loss.  For healthy hair, we need a regular hair care routine. If so, we can expect to experience normal hair growth– approximately ½” per month or 6” a year. Most of us are satisfied with this level of healthy hair growth if we are able to achieve it. The key is: keeping it on our head and not pull it out with damaging tools or by constantly cutting the new growth off.

Nourish Your Hair Growth from the Inside

In order for your hair to grow to its full potential, it’s not enough to simply use any ole’ shampoo and conditioner, then settle for whatever happens. It needs nourishment on a regular basis, so follow the reminders below.

Nourish to Reduce Hair Loss

Nourish your body with healthy, protein-rich foods and you’ll nourish your hair. In order to have healthy hair, skin and nails –a well-balanced diet is critical. Iron-rich, protein foods, as well as those containing Vitamin C, Vitamin B-6, B-12, Foliate and Zinc will do much to prevent hair loss. A healthy diet is absolutely essential for a healthy hair shaft.
Avoid “Fast Foods”.
Want to produce a healthy hair shaft? Unhealthy and malnourishing snacks and fast foods that provide little or zero nourishment to health should be dramatically reduced or even eliminated.

Regular Hair Maintenance Required for Healthy Hair

If you rarely attempt to provide proper care for your hair, then don’t expect miraculous results from minimal efforts. A regular routine must be established and adhered to if you want to minimize hair loss and promote hair growth. Over time, this regular routine will become a very simple process as we accustom ourselves to it:
  1. Daily hair care.
  2. Weekly or biweekly: co-wash* or mild shampoo and conditioning.
  3. Monthly deep conditioning.
  4. Use natural, herbal products that are proven to treat hair loss and promote hair growth.
  5. Clip split ends every 2-3 months as necessary, but use extreme caution: don’t cut off your hair growth!
Caution reminder about clipping split ends:
If you desire to grow longer hair, NEVER clip more than 1/8”-1/4” (inch) per month. If you do, you’ll literally be cutting away your new hair growth and wondering why the hair loss! The reason is that most hair grows about 1/2” (inch) per month, totaling six (6) inches a year. Do the math. This is totally within our control. A tiny snipping is all that is really necessary, especially if we want to see visible hair growth results.

Flower Power -Lawsonia Inermis, Henna

Flower Power -Lawsonia Inermis, Henna by L.J. O'Neal, writerFlower Power Botany: Lawsonia Inermis, Henna
Botanical name:  Lawsonia inermis. Common name(s): Henna, Mehendi, Menhdi (Hindi). Plant Family: Lythraceae (Crape Myrtle family).

Flower Power Modern Usage: Lawsonia Inermis, Henna

The leaf of the henna plant (Lawsonia inermis) contains a dye called, “lawsone” or “hennotannic acid”. Lawsone is primarily concentrated in the leaves of the henna plant. The lawsone extract from the henna plant has been used for literally centuries to dye the hair, skin, fingernails, leather and wool. The chemical reaction between lawsone and the protein keratin in skin and hair results in a strong permanent stain.

Flower Power History: Lawsonia Inermis, Henna

Did you know that the flower power of the henna plant have been used to create perfume since ancient times? The perfume oil, called an attar, is made from distilling the flower petals in water. The steam produced from the process is added to mild sandalwood oil (a base or fixative), thus blending the oils together until the sandlewood is totally inundated with the fragrance of the henna flowers. This steeping process actually allows the delicate fragrance of the flower to mature and last longer than if the oil was alone. The fragrance actually improves with age.

Natural henna perfume has experienced resurgence in recent years. Henna flowers are among the most fragrant flowers on earth. Best grown as a tender outdoor container tropical or annual and can be propagated by cuttings or seed. The fragrance is best from a distance when mixed with air.

Flower Power -Lawsonia Inermis, Henna by L.J. O'Neal, writer. In Asian perfumery, the henna plant flower’s essential oil is obtained from oil seeds that have been drying in the sun for several days with henna flowers thrown upon them. The oils seeds are naturally saturated with the fragrance. The oil is not only used for perfume, but it is used for hair maintenance. Henna flower oil is  also massaged onto the face (to improve complexion) and body (to relieve aching muscles).

In addition to hair dye and perfumes, parts of the henna plant is also often used in cosmetic products as a hair conditioner and other preparations have included it for its reputed astringent, anti-dandruff and nail strengthening effects. Lawsone has also been used as a sunscreen.

Use all-natural skin and hair care products, such as those offered by Saba Botanical of USA. For a truly natural hair color dye, use Lustrous Henna®. Men and women who want to enhance their natural hair color, cover gray hair and desire healthy, supple hair attest to the benefits of Lustrous Henna®.
