How to Prevent Scalp Damage
Perhaps, like many men and women, you have been using chemical hair dyes for years and believe that since you have not experienced any allergic reaction, scalp damage will never occur. It may be a surprise, but did you know that you increase the probability of severe allergic dermatitis and scalp damage every time you apply a chemical hair dye? Therefore, the first step to prevent scalp damage is obvious: stop using a chemical dye to color your hair.
Problems associated with ongoing chemical hair dye use
- Epidermal type of melasma on the forehead and neck; black circle around the eyes due to sun sensitization of the skin.
- Hair shaft damage produces dull, brittle, unmanageable hair.
- Permanent hair dye penetrates the cuticle of the hair, damaging it. The hair is exposed to hydrogen peroxide and ammonia, causing overlapping of cuticular seates to lift from the hair cortex, thereby leading to rapid loss of amino acid. By removing the proteins that build the structural strength, the hair shaft is weakened. The chemical damage results in an easily fractured hair shaft and eventual hair loss.
- Permanent hair color dye products containing para-phenylenediamine (PPD), combinations of hydrogen peroxide and ammonia, as well as other chemical ingredients have proven to be extremely harmful to one’s health, especially through overuse.
- Chemical hair dye has caused major scalp damage, resulting in allergic contact dermatitis, leading to permanent damage.
A Beneficial Hair Dye that Dermatologists’ Recommend
The second step to prevent scalp damage is to use what so many dermatologists recommend: An all-natural, vegetable/plant-based hair dye. In fact, henna hair dye is the only alternative natural hair dye, recommended by the FDA, for natural hair color dye and hair loss prevention. The fact is that pure henna produces a harsh red-orange color, when used alone. However, you will be happy to know that a beneficial hair dye actually exists that will color your hair in an array of natural shades. It’s totally natural, composed only of ingredients that have been used since ancient times to not only color hair but also to condition and prevent scalp damage.
Depending on the shade, pure henna powder is mixed with other vegetable/plant extracts that produce natural highlights and maintain healthy hair. The work of mixing to find that correct shade has been done for you. However, don’t confuse this with pre-mixed 'black henna' products that are not labeled safely or lab-certified. When purchasing, it’s absolutely essential to always know the reputation of the company you’re ordering from. The product I refer to in this article is called, Lustrous Henna®.
