Pure Indigo Powder for Dark Brown Hair to Black Hair –Naturally.

Pure Indigo Powder for Dark Brown Hair to Black Hair –Naturally. -by L.J. O’Neal, writer.
About Pure Indigo Powder for Darker Hair

Henna is the most widely used natural dye throughout the entire globe. However, Pure indigo is the second most powerful and widely used natural dye. When henna and indigo are properly combined together for hair coloring, the results are fantastic. This combination produces an array of shades from brown, dark brown, blue-black, purplish-black, natural black, to jet-black hair. The results may vary, depending upon the process, hair condition, percentage of gray and the ratio of pure henna and pure indigo in this process. The henna and indigo application can be done in either a two-step or one-step process. Use together or separately, either way the results are admirable: hair is soft and silky to the touch.

The Indigo Plant

The word indigo has its origin from the Latin word 'Indicium' meaning blue dye from India. Indigofera Tinctoria is a sub-tropical plant that yields indigo. Since ancient times it’s been used by men and women to dye textiles and hair. As a hair dye, pure indigo is a green plant and the green leaves are dried, crushed and powdered. The dye is made from processing the plant’s leaves by soaking them in water and allowing them to ferment. This converts the natural glycoside indicant into the dye, indigotin. It can then be pressed into cakes, dried and powdered.

Pure Indigo Powder Consumer Reviews

“I used this product with the Lustrous Henna® dark brown combined to give me a darker tone. I wanted it as close to black as possible. I have a head full of grey and for many years I've been dying it with over the counter permanent hair dyes. Eventually those started to make my skin break out in a rash so I decided to give this a try. It is an amazing product! I absolutely love it! My hair feels and looks healthier.

The color is rich and the mix of those two hennas gave me the black I was looking for. It is safe enough to use all the time and did not make me break out in a rash. It is all-natural, so it is safe. I had read somewhere while I was reading about henna in general, that instead of mixing it with water, you could mix it with coconut milk. I decided to that instead, but water works just as well. It's a wonderful product and I can't imagine using anything else. Like any henna, it's messy but once you get used to manipulating it all, it becomes easier. I can't say enough good things about it. –Ivonne A. –Online review.

“If you want black hair and absolutely brilliant coverage of gray, you need indigo. I dye my hair first with Lustrous Henna® Soft Black and then use Saba’s Pure Indigo. I have a lot of gray and the coverage is awesome. Really great results!!! – Z. W., Bayonne, NJ. USA

“Wonderful for preventing black hair from fading! I bought this and used it with the Lustrous Henna® in Soft Black. I love the shade of black this gave me! I have a bluish/purplish hue of black from using this! As a person who loved dying her hair a blue black I am extremely satisfied with the results! I will continue to buy this product. No more dangerous PPD products for me no more!” –Sarah, California USA

Shikakai for Hair Growth, an Ancient Secret from Trees -Recipes

Shikakai for Hair Growth, an Ancient Secret from Trees –Recipes, by L.J.O’Neal, writer.
Use Ancient Shikakai for Hair Growth

Shikakai is an ancient botanical known as, “fruit for hair” that promotes hair growth by nourishing the scalp at the glandular level. It also can strengthen hair roots. It is rich in vitamin C and vitamin D, along with other nutrients that nourish the hair follicles and promote hair growth. It can be used by itself or mixed with other natural ingredients in powder form, along with water to form a paste that is then applied to the hair.

Shikakai is used as a mild cleansing shampoo in India. Shikakai powder is similar to soap nuts in that it doesn’t produce the amount of lather a sulfate-containing shampoo would. However, it is an excellent cleanser for natural hair. It’s very mild with a naturally low pH. It doesn’t strip hair root of natural oils. Since it also acts as a detangler, it usually doesn’t need to be followed up with a conditioner.

Important note about washing hair with plants containing saponin (natural soap): PRIOR to washing the hair, MASSAGE the scalp with coconut oil or castor oil. This has been the traditional method for centuries in India.

Hair Loss Conditions Beyond Our Control

Hair Loss Conditions Beyond Our Control -by L.J.O’Neal, writer.A Hair Loss Reality -you might have to face

I love to share tips about how to prevent hair loss and promote hair growth, as shown in more recent posts. Dedication to a good hair care routine can stop hair loss and grow our hair. While taking care of all the things within our power to control, it can grow abundantly with healthy and strong roots.

An important point to remember is that some hair loss is normal. ‘The average scalp has 100,000 hairs. Each follicle produces a single hair that grows at a rate of half an inch per month. After growing for two to six years, hair rests awhile before falling out. It's soon replaced with a new hair, and the cycle begins again. At any given time, 85% of hair is growing, and the remainder is resting.’1 Hairs at rest fall out regularly, at a rate of about 50-100 strands daily. So don’t freak, you find evidence of normal hair loss in your hairbrush or on clothing.
However, we might find ourselves feeling perplexed, frustrated and hopeless, because nothing appears to be effective in our case. We work so hard at applying all the great tips we learn about for growing a healthy head of hair. Sooner or later we might have to acknowledge what appears to be a very harsh reality: our hair loss might be caused by conditions that are beyond our control. (Please note that while men suffer from hair loss, this article is focused on women’s hair loss).

Hair Loss Conditions Beyond Our Control

Our hair can be likened to a plant that needs nourishing care to enable it to bloom and flourish. Conversely, an unhealthy plant could ‘sicken’ and fail to grow, even after receiving tremendous care. The real cause of the problem needs to be identified. After all, there might be a pest or disease that may be wrecking havoc on our precious plant. Once we know the true source of the problem, we can proceed to handle the issue properly.
Did you know that women’s hair could be triggered by lifestyle factors, as well as approximately 30 different medical conditions?1

Possible Hair Loss Triggers1

  • Thyroid problems
  • PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)
  • Alopecia areata
  • Ringworm (and other scalp infections)
  • Skin disorders
  • Childbirth
  • Birth control pills
  • Crash diets
  • Certain hairstyles that pull the hair (tight braiding, cornrows, pony tails, etc)
  • Cancer
  • Physical or emotional shock
  • Extreme stress
  • Medicine (used to treat: cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, high blood pressure)
  • Hair-pulling disorder2
  • Laser devices
  • Hair transplants in women
  • Bogus hair-loss products and devices
  • The aging process; (the follicle is in a much longer resting phase, instead of the growing phase).
If you are concerned that your hair loss is excessive, then it’s best to visit a dermatologist. In fact the American Hair Loss Council suggests the following:

“First have your hair loss diagnosed by a competent dermatologist who sees hair loss patients on a regular basis. Once you know the diagnosis you will have a better understanding of exactly which treatment option may be best for you.”3

It’s best to visit and work with your physician for optimal care if you suffer hair loss due to a medical or aging issue. Continue to maintain a nourishing hair care routine in conjunction with work with your dermatologist and/or physician.

Gray Hair DIY- Color it Naturally

Gray Hair DIY- Color it Naturally -by L.J.O'Neal, writer.Gray Hair Can Be Colored Naturally

Since gray hair is sometimes resistant to 'change', some folks prefer to take their chances with chemical hair dye. Unfortunately, many have suffered severe damage to their scalp and hair, even after years of chemical hair dye use (myself included). Choosing to ignore the warnings, some believe that ‘nothing will happen to me...I've been dying my hair for years.'

Personally speaking, Lustrous Henna® has worked wonderfully for my resistant grays. It's a completely natural henna hair dye that's quick to apply when compared to traditional henna applications. It also comes in about 12 shades of natural color. I confess that sometimes I have to use a second application of Lustrous Henna® to get these stubborn grays completely black, but my hair looks great afterwards. The bonus is that I no longer worry about damaging my hair with chemical hair dye.  Others are experiencing the same results by using a proven natural hair dye to color their hair.
Find instructions here.

Gray Hair Natural Causes

Melanin gives our hair its natural color. Melanin is spread into the middle layer of the hair shaft or cortex. The type of amount of melanin distributed give hair its natural color. Even though there are a vast variety of hair color shades, they are derived by only two types of pigment. Our hair color is made up of dark (eumelanin) and light (phaeomelanin).
While in the womb, hair is white until the production of melanin quickly begins. Special pigment cells called melanocytes make up melanin. These cells are at the skin’s surface at the follicles from which hair grows. As hair develops, melanin (pigment) containing keratin is injected into the hair cells through the melanocytes. This process is what produces hair color in various hues. Keratin is protein that is essential for healthy hair, skin and nails.1
As we get older, our chance of going gray increases, as melanin decreases. When melanin (pigment) is reduced, our hair color turns gray. If we no longer have any melanin (pigment), our hair turns white.

Gray Hair –Other Causes

Age and genetics are not the only causes of gray hair. Scientists have determined that there are other factors that can cause gray hair and even accelerate its production. These factors can actually change the pigment of hair; causing it to be lighter or darker.
Intrinsic factors: genetic defects, hormones, body distribution, age.Extrinsic factors: climate, pollutants, toxins, chemical exposure.

In 2009, scientists in Europe described how hair follicles produce small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. This chemical builds on the hair shafts, which can lead to a gradual loss of hair color.2

There you have it: for most of us, gray hair is simply caused by the natural cycle of life, our heredity and our environment. Either way, we can do something about it. Color our gray hair –naturally.

Prevent Scalp Damage with a Beneficial Hair Dye

Prevent Scalp Damage with a Beneficial Hair Dye –by L.J. O’Neal, writer. How to Prevent Scalp Damage

Perhaps, like many men and women, you have been using chemical hair dyes for years and believe that since you have not experienced any allergic reaction, scalp damage will never occur. It may be a surprise, but did you know that you increase the probability of severe allergic dermatitis and scalp damage every time you apply a chemical hair dye? Therefore, the first step to prevent scalp damage is obvious: stop using a chemical dye to color your hair.

Problems associated with ongoing chemical hair dye use

  • Epidermal type of melasma on the forehead and neck; black circle around the eyes due to sun sensitization of the skin.
  • Hair shaft damage produces dull, brittle, unmanageable hair.
  • Permanent hair dye penetrates the cuticle of the hair, damaging it. The hair is exposed to hydrogen peroxide and ammonia, causing overlapping of cuticular seates to lift from the hair cortex, thereby leading to rapid loss of amino acid. By removing the proteins that build the structural strength, the hair shaft is weakened. The chemical damage results in an easily fractured hair shaft and eventual hair loss.
  • Permanent hair color dye products containing para-phenylenediamine (PPD), combinations of hydrogen peroxide and ammonia, as well as other chemical ingredients have proven to be extremely harmful to one’s health, especially through overuse.
  • Chemical hair dye has caused major scalp damage, resulting in allergic contact dermatitis, leading to permanent damage.
Prevent Scalp Damage with a Beneficial Hair Dye –by L.J. O’Neal, writer.Dermatologists worldwide want potential patients to be aware of the risks involved in using chemical hair dye. Since scalp damage can be irreversible, why risk it? In spite of this, the decision to go all natural isn’t an easy one for many. At times, you may rightfully feel at a loss when met with the vast array of so-called natural hair dyes that actually contain harmful chemicals! This underscores why it’s important to not only read the label, but to research the company marketing the product.

A Beneficial Hair Dye that Dermatologists’ Recommend

The second step to prevent scalp damage is to use what so many dermatologists recommend: An all-natural, vegetable/plant-based hair dye. In fact, henna hair dye is the only alternative natural hair dye, recommended by the FDA, for natural hair color dye and hair loss prevention.

The fact is that pure henna produces a harsh red-orange color, when used alone. However, you will be happy to know that a beneficial hair dye actually exists that will color your hair in an array of natural shades. It’s totally natural, composed only of ingredients that have been used since ancient times to not only color hair but also to condition and prevent scalp damage.

Depending on the shade, pure henna powder is mixed with other vegetable/plant extracts that produce natural highlights and maintain healthy hair. The work of mixing to find that correct shade has been done for you. However, don’t confuse this with pre-mixed 'black henna' products that are not labeled safely or lab-certified. When purchasing, it’s absolutely essential to always know the reputation of the company you’re ordering from. The product I refer to in this article is called, Lustrous Henna®.

Henna Hair Dye to Highlight, Maintain or Darken Natural Hair

Henna Hair Dye to Highlight, Maintain or Darken Natural Hair –L.J. O’Neal, writer.100% Henna Hair Dye Properties
The good and not-so-good

First, the not-so-good news: Even though pure henna by itself is a natural hair dye, solely using pure henna for hair dye produces a red hair shade that is not very attractive. Traditional henna application generally produces a bright, bright red hair! Actually, the hair dye produces a red-orange or orange-red color (take your pick). Do you really want bright red-orange hair?

Also, traditional henna application can take several hours, sometimes a full day to achieve the desired results. This is because you must wait hours for the hair dye to release after mixing the powder. Then wait longer after application of the hair dye for complete henna hair color results.

Next, the good, actually great news: Henna hair dye colors hair by coating the hair shaft. It provides thickness to hair and adheres as a semi-permanent color. It’s an excellent gray hair cover. Each successive application does the same thing each time; resulting in increased strength and shine to your hair. With continued use, henna hair dye restores the acid/alkaline balance in the scalp. Damaged hair begins to heal and strands are protected from further damage and excessive dryness. Additionally, henna has been used for centuries as an effective aid to treat and prevent dandruff.

Chemical hair dye is proven inferior to the benefits of natural plant-based hair dye and extremely harmful to hair. Thus, pure henna highly recommended as a hair dye by dermatologists and health agencies (even the FDA of the United States).

**‘Vitamin B12 is needed for cell division and blood formation. Neither plants nor animals make vitamin B12. Bacteria are responsible for producing vitamin B12. Animals get their vitamin B12 from eating foods contaminated with vitamin B12 and then the animal becomes a source of vitamin B12. Plant foods do not contain vitamin B12 except when they are contaminated by microorganisms or have vitamin B12 added to them. Thus, vegans need to look for fortified foods or supplements to get vitamin B12 I their diet.’1
