Natural Hair Dye from the Henna Plant

Lustrous Henna user -Gia.

The Henna Plant -a Truly Natural Hair Dye

The Henna plant or Hina (Lawsonia Inermis) is known by a variety of names: Al-Khanna, Al-henna, Jamaica Mignonette, Mehndi, and Mendee. The lawsone, primarily concentrated in the petioles of the leaves, cause staining or dying. However, they must be crushed in order for the lawsone molecules contained within the leaf o the henna plant, to release (when mixed with a mildly acidic liquid, such as found in lemon juice, strong tea, etc.).  Once released, the lawsone gradually bind to the outer layer of the proteins in the skin or hair, thus staining or dying it a bright orange-red hue. Henna must be combined with other natural botanicals, like indigo or coffee beans to achieve darker hues.

Find pure henna powder at www.sababotanical.comHenna Plant Uses in Natural Hair Dye

Fortunately, we don’t have to search for and crush henna ourselves. It is commonly traded as a dried powder from milling and sifting the henna leaf. As a powder, it’s also known as mendhi and is not only used for natural hair dye but hair conditioning as well.  Traditionally, the henna mix must be soaked for 6 to 12 hours and rest on the hair for 3 to 4 hours or the lawsone in the henna won’t work.

Thankfully, Lustrous Henna® natural hair dye releases in about an hour. It’s much easier to apply and comes in many hair color shades.

 -from a happy customer.

Hi Syed,

I just want to drop you a line to let you know that I have received only excellent and positive feedback from customers concerning the use of the Lustrous Herbal/Henna powders for their hair.  As we discussed, I obtained very good results when I tested the various colors.  However, the true test is customer satisfaction level.  I am pleased to say that my customers are extremely satisfied with the coloring capacity of the herbal/henna powders and the conditioning they obtain as well.

I am always looking for a better product to offer to my customers.  So when testing samples of Lustrous Herbal/Henna Powder provided results superior to those obtained with my previous brand of herbal/henna powder, we have switched the brand we offer our customers from our former brand to Lustrous.

Thank you for providing such a reliable and excellent product that will allow men and women to color and condition their hair safely and naturally.  While all of the Lustrous colors provide great color coverage, it is the browns and blacks that tend to absolutely outperform the competition in terms of providing true browns and realistic blacks.  This is welcome news to people with dark hair who have wanted to use henna products but kept getting red results rather than true browns and black.  These are a keeper.

Kindest Regards,
Maureen J.

Protect Your Hair from Your Workout

Protect Your Hair During Your Workout.

Protect Your Hair from Your Workout All Year Long

It’s January and it seems like just about everybody is at the gym. While losing weight and getting in better shape is the top resolution this year (according to U.S. government website), it can wreck havoc on your hair. Why? Usually after a vigorous workout, you naturally want to wash your hair. If you workout every other day that might not be a real issue. However, if you work out five or more days a week, daily washing can become excessive and the result is a super-dry scalp and potential dandruff. Minimizing hair washing is a challenge because itchy scalp, oil build-up and sweaty hair doesn’t produce a ‘pretty’ smell.

How to Protect Your Hair Before the Workout

Use a leave-in conditioner. It only takes a couple of minutes to make this yourself with distilled water or purified water and other natural ingredients. Just lightly spray on your hair, then gently ‘comb’ through with fingers or wide-tooth comb.

2-Minute Imbue Leave-In Conditioner

To make a good leave-in conditioner the easy way: Start with Imbue All-Natural Conditioner about 3 tablespoons. Put in a small spray bottle (approx. 1 pint), then fill with distilled water (or purified water).
Optional for detangling: add 1/8 cup of a carrier oil (extra-virgin olive oil, jojoba oil, almond or coconut oil); add just a couple drops of an essential oil.

2-Minute Vegetable Glycerin Leave-In Conditioner

Mix one part vegetable glycerin with four parts distilled water (or purified water). Put in a spray bottle.

The Pony Tail and Ballerina Bun Protects Hair

Gently secure your hair with a soft hair band; pulled into a ponytail or a cute ballerina bun. Your hair will be out of the way of sticking, sweaty skin. It will also be away from your face and neck. When needed, use gel, head bands or pins -gently.

Get a New ‘Doo’ to Reduce Sweat

Visit your hair stylist for a new shorter haircut or restyle your hair for the gym with braided styles like French plaits or cornrows.

Tie back hair during workout to protect it.

How to Protect Your Hair After the Workout

Instead of always grabbing that bottle of shampoo after a workout, try a gentle cleanser that has stood the test of time.

ACV Baking Soda Hair Cleanser

4 tbsp. baking soda (or less for very short hair)
4 tbsp. apple cider vinegar
½ cup distilled water (or purified water)

Mix the baking soda, apple cider vinegar, distilled water (or purified water) together. Wet hair and apply ACV-BSH Cleanser to hair. Massage gently for a couple of minutes and rinse out with cool water. Follow up with Imbue Natural Conditioner to remove ACV smell and add ancient herbal ingredients with a nice fragrance.

Keep Your Headband And Scrunchies Clean.

You don’t want dirty hair accessories on clean hair. Use a mild soap solution; rinse and air dry. These are simple suggestions to help you enjoy your workout.
Enjoy continued success throughout the year, by protecting your hair.

How Hair Dye Causes Scalp Damage and Hair Loss

How Hair Dye Causes Scalp Damage and Hair Loss. by L.J. O'Neal.

Warning: Hair Dye Causes Scalp Damage

Countless men and women are affected by hair loss caused by heredity, medical condition and natural factors. Unfortunately, the hair loss of many of other individuals could have been prevented -by avoiding products applied to the hair containing harsh chemicals that increasingly damage the hair follicle with every use.

Why can hair loss occur after using permanent hair dyes? Permanent hair dye penetrates the cuticle of the hair, damaging it. The hair is exposed to hydrogen peroxide and ammonia, causing overlapping of cuticular seates to lift from the hair cortex, thereby leading to rapid loss of amino acid. By removing the proteins that build the structural strength, the hair shaft is weakened. The chemical damage results in an easily fractured hair shaft and eventual hair loss.

Permanent hair color dye products containing para-phenylenediamene (PPD), combinations of hydrogen peroxide and ammonia, as well as other chemical ingredients have proven to be extremely harmful to one’s health; especially through overuse. Chemical hair dye has caused major scalp damage, resulting in allergic contact dermatitis, leading to permanent damage.

Problems associated with chemical hair dye:

  • Scalp damage from chemical hair dye can be permanent.
  • Irreversible damage to the protein structure and fracture of the hair shaft.
  • Epidermal type of melasma on the forehead and neck; black circle around the eyes due to sun sensitization of the skin.
  • Hair shaft damage produces dull, brittle, unmanageable hair.

How Hair Dye Causes Scalp Damage and Hair Loss. by L.J. O'Neal. Prevent Hair Follicle and Hair Shaft Damage

The hair shaft becomes thinner and finer as we grow older and the risk of harsh reaction from chemical hair dye increases with each use. Therefore, it is better to avoid chemical dyes altogether and use a natural, plant-based (vegetable) hair dye. In fact, henna hair dye is the only alternative natural hair dye, recommended by the FDA, for natural hair loss prevention.

Dermatologists worldwide want potential patients to be aware of the risks involved in using chemical hair dye. Since scalp damage can be irreversible, why risk it? Use what many dermatologists recommend: pure, all-natural henna for hair.

Natural Hair When Transitioning or After The Big Chop

Natural Hair Transitioning, What is It?

Hair transitioning basically involves allowing the chemical perms and relaxers to remain your hair, while you attempt grow out your natural hair. As your hair grows, the chemical process is cut away ‘inch-by-inch’, until you are left with totally natural hair.

Natural Hair When Transitioning or After The Big Chop. The Big Chop,  (TBC) What is It?

“The Big Chop” (TBC) is cutting away all of the chemical perms and relaxers from your hair, to start fresh with a new, natural head of hair. It usually means sporting a much shorter hairstyle* for a while. One of the main reasons for the big chop is that the focus is now on growing longer, stronger natural hair, usually to a length previously unobtainable with chemicals processes.

Hair Care Regime With Proven Results for Natural Hair Growth

Whether growing natural hair along with chemically-altered hair or sticking with natural hair only, it is absolutely essential to follow a solid hair care regime. Use proven products that build up the condition of every strand of hair and promote healthy hair growth.  Natural hair care products that contain herbal ingredients that have been used for centuries throughout Asia to deep condition, stop hair fall and grow long hair.

Happy woman, Healthy HairAs you grow your natural hair, remember:

Gentle is the word! Always be gentle to your hair, whether you've done The Big Chop or transitioning; especially when your transitioning. When transitioning, you have two types of hair meeting at the ‘line of demarcation’ and it is a very weak line that can break off easily. Therefore: be very gentle!

Take care of your scalp; cleanse twice a week to every two weeks, depending on your hair condition.

Detangle, if you have naturally curly hair. Detangle your hair when it is wet and covered with conditioner; using a wide tooth or detangling comb, work gently from the ends, then upward.

Deep conditioning is your friend! Use a natural hair mask suitable for your hair type and feel the difference.

Moisturize regularly. Water is the best moisturizer. Some like to seal moisture with a little touch of coconut oil, olive oil, shea butter or vitamin E to ends. Others use aloe vera gel as a hair sealant, (but it’s also an excellent moisturizer).

Avoid excessive heat. Air dry your hair is preferable. Flat ironing or blow drying can cause excessively dry hair and can also damage your hair.

My hairdresser was a concerned as she knew of a woman in Perth who had used henna and ended up in hospital for 3 days due to such a bad reaction. I researched the product and decided on your company. Possible Side Effects from Para-phenylenediamine (PPD)

Possible Side Effects from Dangerous Substances

Heed Warnings that Can Save Our Life
What if we had a safety inspection of our home and it was found out that it was no longer healthy for us to live in? We were told that due to a problem with a dangerous substance. If we remained in our beloved home, our very lives and that of our children would be at risk of severe health problems that would plague us for the rest of our lives. What would we do?
It’s not an easy thing to leave beloved possessions behind in order to live in a healthy environment. However, most likely all of us would do it after receiving the facts and learning about all the risks.

Possible Side Effects from Para-phenylenediamine (PPD)

Warnings that Can Save Our Hair and Skin
On a much smaller scale, but just as serious level, many of us (including a number of hair stylists) have made the change and no longer use permanent hair dye. We now use all natural herbal hair dye that is free from PPD, ammonia, peroxide and many other harmful chemicals.
This decision was not an easy one, especially with the emphasis placed on speedy beauty in many hair salons and in advertisement. We came to love our addiction to our favorite hair colors, even if they were not a perfect natural match. But we did it!
Now we love our natural beauty and can still enjoy looking younger using natural herbal products that won’t affect our health. There are others out there, though, still not totally convinced. You are still straddling the fence because it’s not easy. Out of concern for those of you who find yourself in this predicament, I’m repeating a few facts about the risks you’re still taking by using permanent chemical hair dye.

Possible Side Effects According to the FDA, American Cancer Society, CDC, NIH, National Cancer Institute -and a plethora of other consumer organizations

  • Cause allergic reactions including redness, rashes, sores, burning sensations, itching and headaches.
  • Be a possible carcinogen after oxidation, linked to increasing the occurrence of various forms of cancer such as: non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Multiple myeloma, Breast Cancer, Leukemia, Bladder Cancer.
Additionally, a report (08/2007) from leading chemical company DuPont, regarding the dangers of para-phenylenediamine (PPD) in hair dye is well-documented in the Material Safety Data Sheet. (MSDS number: 1155CR) Unfortunately, this document is no longer available online. You must contact DuPont and request it.
See also: Facts about skin allergies from the New Zealand Dermatalogical Society, Inc.
Please give serious thought to this information about possible side effects of chemical hair dye.
Take the next step and make the wise choice: use all-natural plant-based hair dye and be healthy and strong for yourself and especially for those you love.

Baking Soda, Olive Oil and More for Scalp Care

Olive Oil, Baking Soda, Amla Powder Helps Prevent Scalp Damage

Scalp damage can be caused by a variety of practices such as staying out in the sun too long, using excessive heated appliances, tight rollers or even using the wrong kind of brush bristle. However, one of the most overlooked ways to avoid scalp damage is simple to have a healthy hair maintenance routine: daily, weekly and monthly. Suggestions:

Healthy Hair Maintenance. www.sababotanical.comDaily Hair Maintenance

Believe it or not, eating a balanced diet each day with lots of water aids in growing healthy hair and preventing scalp damage. Get your blood circulating with fresh green veggies and raw fruit. Avoid the sun’s harmful rays as much as possible by wearing a scarf, comfortable hat or use an umbrella.
Moisturize dry hair daily. Protect your hair at night by using a satin cap or sleep on satin pillows.

Light Daily Maintenance: In the palms of your hands, add just a few drops of olive oil. Run your hands through your hair to control frizz. You can apply this on dry or damp hair.

Use a conditioner on your hair once or twice a week. Imbue Natural Conditioner is filled with ingredient that really benefit the scalp and hair.

Weekly Hair Maintenance

Shampoo once weekly with an all-natural shampoo filled with ancient botanicals that promote a healthy scalp condition and hair growth. Lustrous Henna Shampoo Powder is an excellent choice. Imbue Natural Shampoo is also extremely nourishing to the follicles.

For exceptionally dry hair, try a hot oil treatment using coconut, almond or extra-virgin olive oil. Castor oil is also beneficial but heavy on the hair, so use on the scalp only. Oils can even be mixed and massaged into the scalp. Cover hair with plastic cap and leave on overnight. You can also use a hot, moist towel until the towel cools (about twenty minutes).

Monthly Hair Maintenance

The scalp should be gently cleansed of debris from hair treatments and products at least once monthly. A good natural scalp scrub needs to be applied with a GENTLE touch. Too harsh or heavy-handed of a massage can cause harm to the scalp by simply being too abrasive. So cleanse your hair and scalp naturally with a very gentle touch.

Baking soda is a natural cleanser. Extra-Virgin Olive Oil adds moisture and controls frizz. Pure Amla Powder is a cleansing agent for the hair and scalp; Amla Powder also protects from dandruff, also helps prevent premature graying. Amla Powder stimulates growth of hair on the scalp and strengthens the hair roots.  Tea tree oil is an effective antifungal and antiseptic.

Baking Soda Scalp and Hair Cleanse

½  cup of Baking Soda
2-3 tablespoons of Pure Amla Powder
¼ cup of Extra-Virgin Olive Oil
5 drops of Tea Tree Oil
½ to 1 cup water (add enough to make a thin paste)

Directions: Mix above until well blended. Apply mixture to hair. Gently massage scrub on scalp in circular motion. After two or three minutes, rinse out with warm water.

Apple Cider Vinegar Clarifying Rinse

½ cup Apple Cider Vinegar
2 cups of water
5 drops each of the following (to minimize vinegar smell):
Rosemary or Peppermint Oil
Sage or Lavender Oil

Directions: Close eyes tightly (you DON’T want this in your eyes) as you tilt head back; pour mixture through hair from root to ends. If needed, tilt head forward to cover hair completely. (Save any remaining mixture, if desired). After a minute or two, rinse with cold water to seal in moisture.

Hot Olive Oil Treatment (HOOT)

Warm up 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil in the microwave for around 15 seconds. Pour into the palm of your hand and gently massage it into the hair -from scalp to ends- until complete saturated. Cover with a plastic cap and damp towel. Wait for at least 30 minutes. Rinse out using a mild shampoo like Lustrous Henna® Shampoo Powder. (You don’t really need to use a conditioner, but if you insist, try Imbue™ Natural Conditioner by Saba Botanical of USA.)

This is a great conditioner for all hair types.

Henna Hair Dye Application -Alternative Methods to Cover Gray

Bridget loves Lustrous Henna. It only takes about 90 minutes from start-to-finish to color hair with Lustrous Henna® Hair Dye.

Using Lustrous Henna® is the quickest way I know of to naturally color my natural soft black hair. The natural ingredients are premixed to laboratory specifications without any chemicals, saving me a ton of precious time. If my gray hair ends up being reddish and not Soft Black, most times I simply reapply the Lustrous Henna® Soft Black and “boom”, it’s perfectly covered with soft black color! Bridget (pictured) selected a different shade of Lustrous Henna that's extremely flattering. This is still much faster than the alternative methods.

Henna and indigo powder.Alternative: Henna Hair Dye -Baked Method Application

This “baked” method takes -about 5 hours- from prep to completion. I honestly can’t remember where I learned about this method to speed up the release and application of pure henna (when compared to the traditional overnight method of approximately 10-24 hours). However, I’ve never been disappointed with the results to achieve jet black hair.

Why I Occasionally Use the Baked Release Method for Pure Henna Hair Dye

Reason #1: I personally use this method occasionally when my hormone imbalances or medications appear to be interrupting my Lustrous Henna® Soft Black application and my stubborn gray hair ends up being a deep red (very pretty, though). However, as mentioned previously, most times I simply reapply the Lustrous Henna® Soft Black and “boom”, it’s perfectly covered with soft black color! This is still much faster than the alternative methods.

Reason#2: Followed up with an indigo application, my hair becomes jet black. Even though, “Soft Black” is my natural hair color, for a more dramatic effect, I’ll color my hair “Jet Black”.

Seriously, due to the lengthy 5 hour process with this “quicker” method of achieving Pure Henna dye release, I rarely use it because:
  • I actually love using 100% All Natural Lustrous Henna® Soft Black.
  • Lustrous Henna® makes my hair very soft, beautiful and…it takes only 90 minutes!

Alternative: Traditional Henna Hair Dye Application (Longest Method)
(10-24 hours from start to finish)

If you don’t mind spending several hours dying your hair color naturally, the links below are to an old technique you may prefer.* Perhaps you simply want jet black hair or to cover (super-stubborn resistant) gray hair, using a traditional method of ancient ingredients and avoid the harmful effects of chemical hair dye. If you are pregnant or nursing, then this is the recommended method for hair color if you desire jet black hair. If you are a man who wants to avoid dangerous chemical progressive dyes and get jet black hair, then this is a henna hair dye method for you too.

REMEMBER: If you simply don’t have the time and want to naturally dye your hair in about 90 minutes, use 100% Lustrous Henna in Soft Black (no jet black hair shade yet).

Henna Hair Dye Quickest Method to Color Hair and Cover Gray

It only takes about 90 minutes from start-to-finish to color hair with
Lustrous Henna® Hair Dye.

Using Lustrous Henna® Hair Dye is the quickest way I know of to naturally color my hair. The natural ingredients are premixed to laboratory specifications without any chemicals, saving me a ton of precious time.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, it’s best to stick with Mother Nature for safe hair coloring.
The following is a simple reminder:

Henna Hair Dye -a Healthy Alternative to Chemical Hair Dye

There are many products marketed to consumers that are claimed to be “all-natural”, however, upon closer examination these claims simply are not true. Many other all-natural hair color products have been disappointing to consumers worldwide, due to unsatisfactory performance. This serious issue led to much more extensive research and testing and the development of an exquisitely unique all natural hair dye formula found totally in Mother Nature. The product is marketed by Saba Botanical of USA under the brand name of Lustrous Henna®.

Lustrous Henna® is a vegetable-based hair dye that comes only in powder form in a sealed bag. It's a deposit only hair dye that is translucent; it allows the normal color variations of the hair to shine through, adding a natural radiant luster. Lustrous Henna® hair dye currently comes in a variety of natural hair color shades that can also be mixed to create other desired shades. Due to properties inherent in Mother Nature, Lustrous Henna® cannot lighten your hair color. The hair shade you choose will depend on the hair color (natural or dyed) you have. It's a safe, healthy alternative to harsh chemical hair dye.
