The botanical name for Tulsi is: Ocimum tenuiflorum (in the Lamiaceae family). It is a small flowering plant with a strong aroma. There three main types of tulsi cultivated in India. The green-leaved variety (Sri or Lakshmi tulsi, a purple-leaved variety (Krishna tulsi) and Karpoora Tulsi.  

Tulsi (Ocimum Tenuiflorum) flowering plants have been used topically and medicinally for centuries in Ayurveda.
