Natural Hair Facts. Why Take Care of Our Hair?

www.SabaBotanical.comWhat is Hair Exactly?

Hair is a filamentous biomaterial that grows from follicles found in the dermis. The human body, apart from the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, is covered in follicles which produce thick terminal and fine vellus hair. Most common interest in hair is focused on natural hair growth, hair types and natural hair care.*

Getting Down to the Root of the Matter

Hair is an important biomaterial primarily composed of protein, notably keratin. Keratin assembles into rope-like intermediate filaments. The structure of these filaments provides strength to the natural hair shaft. Natural hair growth begins under the skin in a hair follicle. The only "living" portion of the hair is found in the follicle. The hair that is visible is the hair shaft, which exhibits no biochemical activity and is considered dead. The base of the root is called the bulb, which contains the cells that produce the hair shaft. Other structures of the hair follicle include the oil producing sebaceous gland which lubricates the hair.

www.SabaBotanical.comHair Colors and Pigment

All hair colors are the result of two types of hair pigment. Both these pigments are types of melanin produced inside the hair follicle and packed into granules found in the fibres. Eumelanin is the dominant pigment in dark-blond, brown and black hair colors, while pheomelanin is increased amounts in red hair colors .Blond hair colors are the result of having little pigmentation in the hair strand. Gray hair colors occur when melanin decreases or disappears.

A Single Strand

Each strand of hair is made up of the medulla, cortex, and cuticle. The innermost region, the medulla, is not always present and is an open, unstructured region. The highly structured and organized cortex, or middle layer of the hair, is the primary source of mechanical strength, water uptake. The cortex contains melanin, which colors the fiber based on the number, distribution and types of melanin granules. The shape of the follicle determines the shape of the cortex, and the shape of the fiber is related to how straight or curly the hair is. Asian hair typically has a round fiber and is quite straight. Oval and irregularly shaped fibers are generally wavier or even curly. The cuticle is the outer covering. Its complex structure slides as the hair swells and is covered with a single molecular layer of lipid that makes the hair repel water. The diameter of human hair varies from 17 to 180 µm (0.00067 to 0.0071 in), depending on the color. Flaxen hair is the thinnest and black hair is the thickest.*

www.SabaBotanical.comIf Hair is Dead, Does it Really Matter What I Do to it?

Absolutely. If we care about our hair, it doesn’t have to be dull, dry and lifeless. We can choose to have naturally beautiful and healthy hair. Caring for and protecting our scalp is essential for hair growth and beauty. Therefore, avoiding synthetic chemical dyes will prevent potential skin irritation and severe allergic reaction.

Natural Hair Color with Chemical Highlights is Not Safe.

Photo by Dean Wissing_WikipediaAbout Chemical Process to Highlight Natural Hair Color “Hair highlighting/lowlighting refers to changing a person's hair color, using lightener or hair color to color strands of the hair in varying sizes. There are four basic types of highlights: foil highlights, hair painting, frosting, and chunking. Highlights can be done in natural or unnatural colors. Hair lightened with bleach is considered permanent.” Using chemical process to achieve this effect is unsafe and dangerous to natural hair color.

Basic foil highlighting “Foil highlighting is the process of using foil to separate strands of hair which will be lightened from strands of hair which will remain its natural color.[1] The process is done by applying lightener to the hair that has been woven and separated using an applicator brush. The foil is then folded as to protect the hair and surrounding area during the "processing" time. This is the amount of time required to achieve the desired results. In highlighting hair hydrogen peroxide mixed with pigment is used to change the color of the strand.[2] This process is also used in applying "lowlights" to the hair. In this process, hair dyes are used to create strands of hair that are darker than the natural hair color. The foils are often used to separate hair strands for high and low lights during the same process.” (PPD allergy, chemical compounds alert**)

Hair painting “Hair painting is a method of highlighting natural hair color that may be done at home. Hair painting methods are often permanent and employ a simple hair-painting brush. Hair painting is also used with temporary and semi-permanent types of brushes. While brushes are commonly used in hair painting, one may also use combs to paint or highlight thin-sized strands of hair. Balayage is a technique referring to free-form painting on clean, styled hair. The results are subtle and more natural looking than foiling or chunking.” (PPD allergy, chemical compounds alert**)

Frosting “Frosting refers to the process of free-hand lightening the tips of the hair, and is generally performed on men with short hair.” (PPD allergy, chemical compounds alert**)

Chunking “Chunking refers to a style of highlight which is larger and thicker than a traditional highlight, rather than to a method of creating highlights.[3] Chunky highlights are generally offered in a wider variety of bold natural colors, as well as a large number of artificial, or unnatural, colors and are used to create more contrast, rather than subtle texture, as in traditional, thinner highlights.” (PPD allergy, chemical compounds alert**) According to leading dermatologists, more variety of colors mean more chemical compounds* that are potentially dangerous to the hair and hair shaft.

A Better Way to Highlight Natural Hair Color AVOID CHEMICALS ALTOGETHER. There is an alternative, 100% natural and proven hair treatment that will color and highlight your natural hair in beautiful lustrous shades.

Twyla R. loves www.SabaBotanical.comI'm a 54 yrs. old"natural" brunette and LOVE Lustrous Henna and their wonderful customer service with Syed.

A few months ago I was diagnosed with Lymphoma at Mayo Clinic with follow up 3 mos. visits to a Hematologist, blood specialist there. I then began to think about changing some of my lifestyle habits and a NATURAL Hair Color was an easy one to change. I am not on chemo since my Dr. says my own immune system is trying to fight this cancer. Chemo kills the good & the bad, therefore I'm thankful I do still have my hair at this time.

My friend introduced me to Lustrous Henna when I complemented her hair. I didn't even know she used any type of color on it, because it looked so natural. She ordered my first time with her order,to try it out. So I have twice now, due to shorter hair.So glad I heard about this henna from her!

I am thankful for the Lustrous Henna's shorter process time compared to others that require an extremely longer process and it leaves my hair in much, much better condition than when I did salon color.

My single priority, due to my health issue,is that it's safe, plus it looks and feels so natural and healthy. I can't say enough good about it.

It was my pleasure to visit with Syed a few days ago about Lustrous Henna. His patience and very informative manner is so helpful and refreshing. He is an asset to Lustrous Henna products. He helped me a great deal with tips on how to tone the gray as it grows in from my root line.

I sincerely thank you, Syed and Lustrous Henna for the difference you have made in my life.
I'll be ordering again soon.

Warmest Regards,
Twyla R., Greene IA

Henna Hair Dye: A Brief History.

www.SabaBotanical.comHenna Hair Dye Botanical Name: Lawsonia inermis

“Henna (Lawsonia inermis, also called mignonette tree¹) is a flowering plant used since antiquity to dye skin, hair, fingernails, leather and wool. The name is also used for dye preparations derived from the plant, and for the art of temporary tattooing based on those dyes. Henna has been used as a cosmetic hair dye for 6,000 years. In Ancient Egypt, Cleopatra and Nefertiti were known to have used it. It was commonly used for many centuries in areas of India, the Middle East, and Africa.”*

www.SabaBotanical.comHenna Hair Dye through History

“In Europe, henna hair dye was popular among women connected to the aesthetic movement and the Pre-Raphaelite artists of England in the 1800s. The fashion for Orientalism led young women with a bohemian inclination to begin tinting their hair with henna.² Dante Gabriel Rosetti's wife and muse, Elizabeth Siddal, had naturally bright red hair. Contrary to the cultural tradition in Britain that considered red hair unattractive, the Pre-Raphaelites fetishized red hair. Siddal was portrayed by Rosetti in many paintings that emphasized her flowing red hair.³ The other Pre-Raphaelites, including Frederic Leighton, Evelyn de Morgan, Anthony Frederick Augustus Sandys, and French painters such as Gaston Bussière (painter) and the Impressionists further popularized the association of henna hair dye and young bohemian women.

Opera singer Adelina Patti is sometimes credited with popularizing the use of henna hair color in Europe in the late 1800s. Parisian courtesan Cora Pearl was often referred to as La Lune Rousse (the red moon) for dying her hair red. In her memoirs, she relates an incident when she dyed her pet dog's fur to match her own henna hair color.4 By the 1950s, Lucille Ball popularized "henna rinse" as her character, Lucy Ricardo, called it on the television show I Love Lucy. Henna hair color gained popularity among young people in the 1960s through growing interest in Eastern cultures.5”**

“Black Henna” is Dangerous. Lustrous Henna in Soft Black is Safe.

www.SabaBotanical.comLustrous Henna® in Soft Black Shade is NOT “Black Henna”.

Lustrous Henna® is 100% All Natural Hair Color Dye. The soft black shade is derived from mixing pure henna (from the henna plant) with the extracts of pure indigo and other botanicals found in nature. Lustrous Henna® is completely para-phenylenediamine-free (PPD-free hair dye); also, ammonia-free, peroxide-free. A totally natural hair color.

Lustrous Henna® remains in its natural herbal form (a powder) in all shades, including soft black natural hair color.

To avoid confusion, always make sure of the company’s reputation that you are dealing with, since there are no regulations in many countries, including India, for ingredient labels. For this reason, “Black Henna” dyes usually contain even higher concentrations of PPD than many commercial hair dyes sold in the USA. Sadly many individuals think that when they purchase this product, it is pure indigo (or pure indigo only mixed with pure henna). Far from all natural hair color, the results have led to sad consequences and also some dermatologic horror stories.

www.SabaBotanical.comA Word about Pure Indigo:

It is not the so-call misnomer, “Black Henna”.

"Black Henna" is not pure indigo or "black" indigo. If indigo is mixed with chemicals dyes, or even henna that has been compromised by chemicals, including PPD, then it is not pure indigo or the so-called, "black henna". When you want pure indigo, make sure what you buy is: pure indigo.

If you want all natural hair color, stay far away from “Black Henna”. Choose Lustrous Henna.

"Love your product! I am 85% grey and ordered the Henna Soft Black along with the Indigo. I used three parts of Henna Soft Black and one part of Indigo. I love the results. I got a very dark brown to black color hair which was exactly what I was looking for.
I used chemical dyes two or three times and developed severe reactions to the chemicals used in those products. With the Henna Soft Black and Indigo I just get great looking hair with no reactions. Would recommend to anyone looking for natural products". Mr.Sam K. Laredo, TX

Natural Hair Dye Covers Gray, Conditions Hair -for Men

www.SabaBotanical.comNatural Hair Dye that should be a priority when deciding to color your hair. The primary reason most men color their natural hair is to rid themselves of gray hair in order to look and feel younger. Some long for black hair, brown hair color or just their natural hair color. While, there is certainly nothing wrong with that, men should also pay attention to warnings on the packages of chemical dyes.

Permanent and semi-permanent synthetic dyes usually contain extremely harmful and toxic chemicals like P-Phenylenediamine (PPD), ammonia, peroxide, lead acetate and a slew of others that can cause damage to the natural hair shaft. They also have caused severe allergic reaction on the scalp, neck and face of several dermatologists’ patients. That's one of the reasons dermatogist recommend a using natural hair dye to color hair such as a henna hair dye..

Natural Hair Dye is Safer than Chemical Dyes

Progressive chemical dyes and hair color formulas have been targeted at men for the past 40 years.

These change the color gradually. Did you know that Grecian Formula was banned in Canada and European countries because it contained lead acetate, at the time? It is still sold and approved for use in the United States, but it must carry a warning label about the lead acetate in the product* marketed in the states.

Men, there is no need to take risks with your health or natural hair color.

Use a natural hair dye that is used widely (henna hair dye). www.SabaBotanical.com

Dry Scalp Olive Oil Treatment and Recipes

www.SabaBotanical.comOlive oil for hair is an excellent way to improve dry, damaged hair quickly. First, what should we avoid and why?

Dry Scalp Hair Treatment One: Avoid “moisture zappers”:
  • Excessive heat (blow dryers, flat irons, curling irons, etc.). Try to let hair dry naturally after shampooing or conditioning.
  • Excessive brushing.
  • Excessive Shampooing and being a “chemical hair product junkie” (using just about any commercial product claiming to help your hair)
  • Using chemical hair dye, hair perms, and hair relaxers.
  • Change in weather (causing use of heating systems in winter).
  • Direct sunlight will also dry hair out, zapping the moisture.
Dry Scalp Hair Treatment Two: Hair Needs Moisture -but What Kind? www.SabaBotanical.com

Start with the inside. Hydrating your body helps hydrate your hair. Drink water! At least 64 ounces daily. Add olive oil to your meals and salads and it will increase your skin’s suppleness and boost the shine in your hair. www.SabaBotanical.com

Dry Scalp Hair Treatment Three: Deep Condition Your Locks

Maintain the vibrancy in your hair by deep conditioning and oiling your scalp and roots-REGULARLY. The following hair recipe treatments can be used in-between normal shampooing and conditioning. Moisturize your strands from the roots to tip with a moisturizing conditioner that won’t weigh your hair down. Olive oil is a great source of Vitamin E and Eggs are protein-rich.

Olive Oil for Hair Recipe

1: Olive Oil for Hair Mayonnaise Conditioner

Simply whisk or blend together 1 egg with ½ to 1 cup of olive oil (depending on the length of your hair). After mixing well, pour the conditioner content onto dry hair and cover it with a plastic cap and warm towel; leave it on for at least an hour. For deeper conditioning use gentle low heat from a bonnet dryer for 20-30 minutes. Rinse off with a very mild, nurturing herbal shampoo like, Lustrous Henna® Shampoo Powder. No need to use a conditioner with Lustrous Henna® Shampoo Powder. While still wet, gently comb hair through with a wide-tooth comb (start from hair tips, ending with roots). Let your hair dry naturally.

2: Hot Olive Oil Treatment (HOOT)

This is a great conditioner for all hair types. Warm up 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil in the microwave for around 15 seconds. Pour into the palm of your hand and gently massage it into the hair -from scalp to ends- until complete saturated. Cover with a plastic cap and damp towel. Wait for at least 30 minutes. Rinse out using a mild shampoo like Lustrous Henna® Shampoo Powder. (You don’t really need to use a conditioner, but if you insist, try Imbue™ Nurturing Conditioner or So Natural™ Moisturizing Conditioner by Saba Botanical of USA.)

3: Extra tip to eliminate dry scalp and frizzy hair:

Light Daily Maintenance: In the palms of your hands, add just a few drops of olive oil. Run your hands through your hair to control frizz. You can apply this on dry or damp hair.
