A Natural Soap for Soft Hair and Soft Skin: Reetha (Soapnut)
Soapnuts contain saponins which are a natural surfactant or natural soap. They have been used for washing for thousands of years by native peoples in Asia as well as Native Americans. Besides containing excellent cleansing properties, it is known to produce soft hair and soft skin. From the ancient days until now, in some parts of the world people make liquid soap from Soapnuts, by simply grinding and soaking the fruit overnight. The seed of the fruit contains precious oil. The extract is made by grinding the seed and the pulp into a powder to use in shampoo.Natural Science: Reetha Fruit (Soapnut)
The Indian fruit, Reetha, contains natural soap. Soapnuts, Soapberries are given this common name because the fruit pulp is used to make soap. The generic name is derived from the Latin words saponis, meaning “soap,” and indicus, meaning “of India.”Sapindus is a genus of about five to twelve species of shrubs and small trees in the Lychee family, Sapindaceae, native to warm temperate to tropical regions from ancient to modern times. The flowers form in large panicles, each flower small, creamy white encased in green pinnate or feather-shaped leaves.
The fruit is a small leathery-skinned drupe (a fruit in which an outer skin or fleshy part surrounds a shell or pit with a seed inside –a peach is an example of a drupe). The yellow color of soapnuts ripens to a blackish color, containing one to three seeds.
