Curly Hair Reminders -10 Top Natural Hair Tips

CurlyHairCare10 Curly Hair Care Tips

  1. Stay away from relaxers, flat irons, blow dryers and other straightening appliances. Spiral curls be seductively attractive if you treat them right.
  2. Shampoo only when needed (no more than once a week). Instead: “Wash” your hair with a moisturizing conditioner*, instead of shampoo. Co-washing is gentler to your curly hair and you can do it 2 or 3 times a week if you want and still keep your locks protected from dryness and damage.
  3. While hair is wet with conditioner, use a wide-toothed comb to gently comb your hair. Start from the ends, working up to the hair roots.
  4. Avoid clarifying shampoos. They will not protect your wet hair against damage. Choose a shampoo* that works well with curly hair, providing needed moisture without stripping hair of natural oils.
  5. Moisturize daily! Curly hair tends to be drier than other hair types; therefore, moisture is essential to eliminate frizz and brittle hair. First: Lightly spritz your hair with genuine aloe vera juice or other natural hair “spritz”. Next: Apply the moisturizing conditioner in the palm of your hands and gently work through hair from ends to root. A daily moisturizing conditioner can be made by combining your regular conditioner with a little water to thin it out just a tad; then add a small amount of honey and olive oil, almond oil, avocado oil, etc.
  6. Smooth towels are the best choice for wet hair drying protection. Terrycloth towels can cause frizz and even damage the cuticle of the hair. Use a smooth fabric, like a cotton-knit (t-shirt fabric) or microfiber towel designed for curly hair.
  7. Oil seal your hair (lightly) during cooler seasons. Jojoba, lavender and rosemary are some oils easily absorbed, so you don’t have to worry about having oily shine or hands.
  8. Deep condition at least once a week with a moisturizing conditioner to combat excessively dry hair.
  9. Hair Olive Oil Treatment (HOOT) or other oil treatment (for natural hair) is essential for great-looking curly hair.
10. Don’t feed split ends. Every 2- 3 months (seriously that’s all that’s needed for healthy, well-cared for natural hair) have a hair stylist trim only your ends. Make sure your stylist knows that all you want is a light trimming of the ends (not a haircut) or you may start to wonder why your hair isn't getting any longer.

Satin pillows best for hair.BONUS CURLY HAIR CARE TIPS:

Satin pillowcases love natural hair curls. Your hair will be kept from detangling. Cotton pillowcases suck natural oils from hair. If you don’t want to use a satin pillowcase, then cover your hair at night with a satin or satin like hair covering. This will protect your hair from the cotton pillowcase.
Celebrate your natural hair. Take care of it by following the hair care tips above. You’ll become a natural beauty with beautiful curly hair.

Dry Hair Winter Season Protection

Dry Hair Protection During Winter -Season Reminders

Winter season.Lock in that moisture for winter season.  For dry hair: condition daily (rinse in cooler water to seal in moisture), also use a light homemade leave-in conditioner: simply add enough water to current conditioner, mix well, spray a little in your hand and rub through hair or spritz on hair with a spray bottle; avoid cleansing shampoos that strip and cause extra dryness and frizziness. Shampoo less often with mild shampoo or try a conditioner-only wash (co-wash).

Keep hydrated internally. Drink plenty of water. Nourish your hair like you nourish your skin. In other words, eat a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables. This will help you to avoid hair breakage and keep your hair soft and lustrous.

Cooler Showers and Baths: Did you know that hot water in winter dries out skin and hair?
Sun Protection- Especially important  during winter season for both skin and hair. The sun can dry hair and fade color quicker.
Protect hair in winter season.Stay protected for warmth, but avoid harsh fabrics like wool. Direct contact can cause drying and hair breakage.

Yes, you should wear a hat, not only to keep you warm but also to protect your hair from the cold winter season. However, a hat made of cashmere rather than wool is preferred, as wool is very absorbent and will suck the moisture out of your hair, leaving it dry and prone to static. Also, the raw texture of wool is harsh and can cause hair breakage, while cashmere will ensure that it stays looking beautifully smooth and silky when you come in from the cold.

To avoid hair breakage, you can also cover dry hair with a scarf, or hat, beret, cap that is satin or silk-lined (you can make these linings yourself or have someone else do it –sew or glue)* If you don’t like hats, try an updo, pulled back in a bun and snood or use clips to hold your hair down to protect scalp from sun.

Dry hair naturally and use common sense: Don't walk outside in winter with 'naked' and wet hair. Ice does not belong on your hair! It will snap it right off! Avoid hair breakage:

Letting your hair dry naturally is best in winter. Make sure your hair is totally dry before going outside. If this is not possible, cover your hair with a hair-friendly head covering. Remove when you reach your destination and let air dry.

Try NOT to turn up the heat. Heated appliances can damage and cause further hair breakage. For our hair, it’s really best to avoid heated appliances altogether if we’re willing to go that route. However, if we simply can’t deal with the results then: Use an ionizing heat appliance to reduce heat damage. Point the device away from your scalp, thus avoiding damage to the hair cuticle. Prior to drying, flat ironing or using heated rollers, etc. apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner or thermal heat protection cream to hair. Keep heat on medium to low and use a heat diffuser on blow dryers.

Hair Loss as We Age –What Can Be Done?

Middle-Aged-Man-Thinning-HairWanting Our Youth Back as We Age

Naturally as people age, the inclination is to use measures to retain a youthful look. Who really wants to deal with potential hair loss -or a ton of gray hair -when it's not welcome

Melanin is the pigment that gives the hair color. Since they lose melanin with age, many will use stronger permanent hair color dyes. The final hair color is produced when the hair dye interacts with the melanin. Gray hair is usually harder to dye by this measure because of the dramatically lowered melanin level.  Additionally, permanent chemical dyes can damage the hair shaft, since it becomes thinner and finer as we age.

How We Lose Our Hair as We Age

Numerous men and women are affected by hair loss conditions that are extremely difficult to prevent:

Heredity

'We are who we are' or better said: 'who made us who we are'. If a condition such as male –pattern baldness has spanned generations in our family. Guess what?

Medical Condition

There are varying underlying medical conditions that cause hair loss and it’s best to visit a dermatologist to determine if persistent hair loss could be caused by one of these conditions.

However, other countless men and women are affected by hair loss conditions that are preventable:

Natural Factors
  • Using harsh chemicals in hair dye such as para-phenylenediamene (PPD) -that can potentially cause major damage to hair and health.
  • Unhealthy diet can prevent essential nutrients from reaching the hair shaft, thus causing hair loss.
  • Physical inactivity can also contribute to our cells not producing enough oxygen, which can affect our entire body, as well as healthy hair growth.
  • Excessive stress can wreak havoc to our hair.
  • Not following a healthy hair maintenance routine.

Women exercising and happy. How We Can Keep Our Hair as We Age

  • Basically do the opposite of what is listed above under the heading, “Natural Factors”.
  • Use a plant-based hair dye. Dermatologists have recommended the use of all natural pure henna for hair to prevent potential scalp allergy and hair loss caused by the overuse of chemical hair dye. Pure henna coats the hair and doesn’t penetrate the hair shaft, like synthetic hair dye.
  • Eat a well-balanced, nutrient-rich healthy diet.
  • Move it! That’s right: Keep active and get that vital oxygen to every part of your body.
  • Avoid unnecessary stress: Learn to R-E-L-A-X.
  • Follow a healthy hair maintenance routine. Include beneficial botanical ingredients that have been proven to stop hair loss, produce good hair color and grow hair –since ancient times.
Even though aging can be a challenge, preventative measures go a long way in maintaining our hair color and avoiding hair fall. With proper application, you'll be able to look in the mirror and love, not only your hair color, but the fact that is it still healthy.

A Natural Soap for Really Soft Skin and Hair

ReethaA Natural Soap for Soft Hair and Soft Skin: Reetha (Soapnut)

Soapnuts contain saponins which are a natural surfactant or natural soap. They have been used for washing for thousands of years by native peoples in Asia as well as Native Americans. Besides containing excellent cleansing properties, it is known to produce soft hair and soft skin. From the ancient days until now, in some parts of the world people make liquid soap from Soapnuts, by simply grinding and soaking the fruit overnight. The seed of the fruit contains precious oil. The extract is made by grinding the seed and the pulp into a powder to use in shampoo.

Natural Science: Reetha Fruit (Soapnut)

The Indian fruit, Reetha, contains natural soap. Soapnuts, Soapberries are given this common name because the fruit pulp is used to make soap. The generic name is derived from the Latin words saponis, meaning “soap,” and indicus, meaning “of India.”

Sapindus is a genus of about five to twelve species of shrubs and small trees in the Lychee family, Sapindaceae, native to warm temperate to tropical regions from ancient to modern times. The flowers form in large panicles, each flower small, creamy white encased in green pinnate or feather-shaped leaves.
The fruit is a small leathery-skinned drupe (a fruit in which an outer skin or fleshy part surrounds a shell or pit with a seed inside –a peach is an example of a drupe). The yellow color of soapnuts ripens to a blackish color, containing one to three seeds.

Reetha Use Today for Soft Hair and Soft Skin

Even in modern times, Soapnuts, such as those of Sapindus mukorossi, are a popular ingredient in Ayurvedic shampoos and cleansers. They have been used in Ayurvedic medicine as a treatment for eczema and psoriasis. Soapnuts have gentle insecticidal properties and are traditionally used for removing lice from the scalp. There are other numerous medicinal benefits contained within Soapnuts that modern science is currently “discovering”.
Want soft skin and hair? Use the natural soap, Reetha (Soapnut) Fruit Powder, in your hair and skin care regime.

Pure Reetha Powder Organic Wash
You can purchase Pure Reetha (Soapnut) Organic Wash in individual 100 gram packs currently for only $3.99 each at Saba Botanical of USA.

Hair Dye with 'Compound Henna' is a Dangerous ‘Mystery’ Mix.

Compound Henna is Dangerous!'Compound Henna' Hair Dye –What Is It?

Not all henna hair dye mixes are completely herbal or all-natural. There is a mysterious henna mix that generally is composed of lower quality henna that contains lower dye content and is mixed with harmful additives and synthetic dyes that can cause severe allergic reaction. Even if the package doesn’t contain PPD (para-phenylenediamine), ammonia or peroxide, this type of hair dye may contain harsh metallic salts, alcohol and synthetic dyes. Since the henna is mixed with synthetic dyes and ‘who knows what else’, the mixture is referred to as: 'Compound Henna' hair dye.

Perhaps, you’re wondering, “How can such products sold without an ingredient label?” It does seem mysterious. However, the answer is that in the countries where the henna is grown, they might not be required to list the ingredients on the label. Once exported, the U.S. importer is not required to re-label the product.
Additionally, the FDA* states, “Because the FPLA does not apply to cosmetic samples and products used exclusively by professionals--for example, for application at a salon, or a booth at a fair or boardwalk--the requirement for an ingredient declaration does not apply to these products.”

That is why purchasing 'mysterious' henna mixed with unknown additives and synthetic dyes can be a costly and potentially dangerous experience**, even when bought at a “professional” beauty supply store.

Tempted to Buy 'Compound Henna'?

We've seen them on the shelves, with an image of a beautiful woman with long, radiant hair. We’re tempted to ‘buy into’ the image. Should we? Maybe we decide to look beyond the image and try and find the ingredient label. We might be surprised that this so-called 'all-natural' henna hair dye doesn't appear to have an ingredient label! Who knows what is mixed in with this inferior henna?! Don’t buy it!

Lustrous Henna is Natural Hair Dye, by Saba Botanical of USA.

Lustrous Henna® is NOT 'Compound Henna'

Lustrous Henna® is natural hair dye: Premixed from the finest herbal ingredients.
Lustrous Henna® is natural hair dye: Lab-certified to be free of synthetic dyes and additives.
Lustrous Henna® is natural hair dye: It does NOT contain metallic salts or added mineral salts.
Lustrous Henna® is natural hair dye: To achieve the various shades of color, pure henna is mixed with other totally natural botanical extracts.
Lustrous Henna® is natural hair dye: This is also the reason it remains in natural powder form. Safety in natural hair care is a top priority.

Lustrous Henna® is pure henna, highly sifted and 100% natural and the botanical ingredients are listed on every package, on the company blog and website.

 Be Safe. Not Sorry.
