Black Hair from Melanin, Eumelanin
There are two ways to get black hair color naturally. The first is to be born with lots of melanin and eumelanin, since the more you have, the darker your hair will be. Obviously, if you were born with black hair and still have
it, you can be thankful for your lustrous hair.
Hair color pigmentation comes from two types of melanin, eumelanin and pheomelanin. Red hair comes from pheomelanin. The amount of brown or black eumelanin results in blonde, brown or black hair color. Blond hair comes from low concentration of brown eumelanin. If the level is higher, it causes hair to turn brown. High amounts of black eumelanin produce black hair color. Low amounts of eumelanin result in gray hair.

Unfortunately, melanin levels can change over time, so a person's black hair color can change naturally. Additionally, a person can have more hair follicles of more than one color.
