Hair Breakage -6 Reasons and 6 Solutions- Part 1 of 2

Hair Breakage – Reasons and Solutions #1 to #3

Hair Breakage -6 Reasons and 6 Solutions- Part 1 of 2, by L.J. O’Neal, writer.
Avoid fast food traps!
Hair Breakage – Reason #1
Unhealthy Diet

Do you nourish your body with healthy, protein-rich foods to ensure that you’re healthy enough to produce a healthy hair shaft? Or do you ‘survive’ on unhealthy and malnourishing fast foods? Do you drink enough water daily? Improper nutrition is a leading cause of preventable hair loss. It’s absolutely crucial to change to a healthier diet, if you suspect your hair loss is caused by poor eating habits.

Hair Breakage -6 Reasons and 6 Solutions- Part 1 of 2, by L.J. O’Neal, writer. Hair Breakage – Solution #1Correct your Diet

Vegetables, fruits, protein sources and dairy, along with plenty of water will nourish your hair from within. The more natural state of the food, the better for your hair care. We have crucial need to feed our bodies regularly with wholesome food. In order to have healthy hair, skin and nails –a well-balanced diet is critical. Iron-rich, protein foods, as well as those containing Vitamin C, Vitamin B-6, B-12, Foliate and Zinc will do much to improve root condition.

A healthy diet should be the norm. Fast foods should be dramatically reduced or even eliminated. Drink plenty of water. Nourish your hair like you nourish your skin. This will help to keep your hair soft and lustrous. Hydrate for proper skin care and hair care.
Hair Breakage – Reason #2
Neglecting Regular Hair Maintenance

We will experience weak, damaged hair with a tendency to break and fall out –if we don’t take the time to properly care for it.

Hair Breakage – Solution #2Stick to a Proper Hair Care Routine
If we establish a routine of hair maintenance, over time it becomes a very simple process. Gently shampooing and conditioning with natural products on a daily, weekly and monthly basis is an essential key to beautiful, healthy, growing hair. How often you wash your hair depends on the natural condition and texture of your hair. Generally it is recommended to wash your hair 2-3 times a week if your hair is normal with proper moisture balance. Wash hair daily if it is excessively oily and baby fine. If your hair texture is coarse, excessively dry or brittle, then wash it once a week (or even less). If you feel the need to wash your hair more often than recommended, try using a co-wash (conditioner-only wash).
Lock in moisture. Moisturizing hair care tip: use a light leave-in conditioner (daily if you have curly hair; rinse in cooler water to seal in moisture). For a DIY light homemade leave-in conditioner: simply add enough water to current conditioner, mix well, spray a little in your hand and rub through hair or spritz on hair with a spray bottle. An occasional hot-oil treatment restores moisture balance; adds suppleness to hair. Natural herbal oils such as extra-virgin olive oil, organic coconut oil, cold-pressed castor oil and flaxseed oil are known to help strengthen, regrow hair and to eliminate dandruff.
Hair Breakage – Reason #3Split Ends and Lack of Proper Trimming
Thermal, chemical or mechanical stress can cause split ends. For example, the use of curling irons and other heat treatments may cause split ends. Excessive application of hair products such as perms and hair coloring may strip protective layering off the outside of the hair's shaft and weaken the hair, making the hair prone to split ends. Mechanical stresses include pulling a comb forcefully through tangled hair and repeated combing.
Hair Breakage – Solution #3
Control Split Ends

If we establish a routine of hair maintenance, over time it becomes a very simple process and we can control split ends. Avoid excess heat, over-styling with chemical relaxers and hair dyes.

It’s best to have a professional hair stylist trim your hair using extremely sharp scissor. (Dull scissors can cause split ends.) Occasional light trimming of split ends should be included in our hair care routine. This will actually help grow our hair from roots to ends.About every 3 months, a tiny snipping is all that is really necessary, especially if we want to see visible hair growth results.

A word of caution about clipping split ends: If you want to grow longer hair, NEVER clip more than 1/8”-1/4” (inch) per month. If you do, you’ll literally be cutting away your new hair growth! The reason is that most hair grows about 1/2” (inch) per month, totaling six (6) inches a year. Do the math. This is totally within our control.

Chemical Hair Dye on Your Child’s Hair -Is There a Better Way?

Chemical Hair Dye on Your Child’s Hair -Is There a Better Way? -L.J. O’Neal, writer.Chemical Hair Dye for Children and Pre-Teens: A Serious Concern

Nowadays, there is a growing trend of dying children’s hair and using harsh chemical dyes to do so. Most parents know that children want to follow the trends of their peers.

Whether you decide for or against using permanent hair dye, it’s wise to heed the warnings from dermatologists, health organizations and governmental agencies -for the sake of your children and their healthy growth.
Parents, please take heed to the following warning:

Chemical Hair Dye Use Can Cause Severe Allergy

Chemical Hair Dye on Your Child’s Hair -Is There a Better Way? -L.J. O’Neal, writer.According to numerous dermatological and other medical reports hair dye allergy is on the rise. An article in the British Medical Journal* reported that in Japan, Denmark and USA, hair color use has increased among male and female youth. “Severe hair dye reactions among children have recently been reported.”

According to the FDA, adults using chemical hair dyes have suffered serious problems such as: hair loss, burning, redness, itchy or raw skin, swelling in the face, trouble breathing, permanent scarring and more.
There also have been several young dermatological patients that have suffered terrible skin reactions from chemical hair color dyes containing harsh ingredients such as Para-Phenylenediamine (PPD), coal tar, peroxide, ammonia and much more.  There are also studies that link prolonged use of such dyes to cancer.

In a nutshell: Permanent and most semi-permanent hair dye contains harsh chemical ingredients such as para-phenylenediamine (PPD), coal tar, peroxide, ammonia and much more -that have been medically proven to cause adverse damage to an adult scalp and hair shaft. The potential for damage to the developing skin and hair shaft of a young, preteen or teen is even greater.

I’m a Concerned Parent
Is there an alternative to chemical hair dye?

Chemical Hair Dye on Your Child’s Hair -Is There a Better Way? -L.J. O’Neal, writer. If you're still determined to dye preteen or teen hair: Keep it natural. Use a proven safe and all natural (lab certified) hair coloring that coats the hair and does not penetrate the hair shaft. I recommend Lustrous Henna® hair color.  It’s a plant-based hair dye and is highly recommended by many dermatologists. Its ingredients have been used since ancient times to enhance hair color and for radiant natural highlights.

Following harmless fashion and style trends can bring joy and lots of fun. However, using harmful and dangerous substances to follow a trend isn’t wise and the consequences won’t be joyful at all. Parents, do you agree? I sincerely hope so.

Teen Hair Dye –Why Go Natural with Lustrous Henna Hair Color

Teen Hair Dye –Why Go Natural with Lustrous Henna Hair Color, by L.J. O’Neal, writer.Teen Hair Dye
-Creating Your Style

The vast arrays of hair colors that attract today’s modern teen add interest to your personal style. Teen hair dye goes from platinum blonde to blue-black to purple to silver gray…there appears to be no end to your imagination! It’s all about making your own hair statement. Therefore, I want to share a couple of things with you that will help you think about how to make your hair statement with teen hair dye.
Instead of going the “permanent hair dye” route, have you thought about just bringing out your own natural highlights? That’s right. Using a natural hair dye to bring out your own highlights can help you make your best style statement. The good news is that you don’t have to take a chance with your health either –if you go natural. Using an all-natural plant-based hair color dye in a variety of shade choices will help you create a personal style you will be proud to rock.
Please read the report below and think of the potentially serious allergies and other consequences that can occur with increased use of permanent chemical teen hair dye.

Teen Hair Dye –Why Go Natural with Lustrous Henna Hair Color, by L.J. O’Neal, writer.Teen Hair Dye -Why You Need Lustrous Henna®

Did you know that regular use of chemical hair dye could be quite risky?
“Allergic reactions to hair dye are increasing as more and younger people dye their hair, warn researchers.
This can lead to dermatitis on the face and, in severe cases, facial swelling may occur.
More than two thirds of hair dyes currently contain para-phenylenediamine (PPD) and other related agents. During the 20th century, allergic reactions to PPD became such a serious problem that it was banned from hair dyes in Germany, France, and Sweden.
Market research also indicates that more people are dying their hair and are doing so at a younger age… Severe hair dye reactions among children have also recently been reported.
‘Wider debate on the safety and composition of hair dyes is overdue’, say the authors. Cultural and commercial pressures to dye hair are putting people at risk and increasing the burden on health services.
It may not be easy to reverse these trends, however, as some patients have continued to use such dyes even when advised that they are allergic to them and risk severe reactions, they conclude.”

I’m writing this, speaking from my own experience. After years of using semi-permanent chemical hair dye, I was surprised to develop an allergic reaction at the base of my neck. I’m so glad that I found Lustrous Henna Hair Color®. I learned the following:
Why risk my health when who I REALLY want be is ME? Naturally.

Allergic Reaction to PPD Can Be Shocking –Graphic Image Warning

Allergic Reaction to PPD Can Be Shocking

However, at first, it might be a reaction at the application site. The reaction might be itchy skin, blisters, redness, rash, swelling and pain. With each subsequent hair dye application, allergic reaction to Para-Phenylenediamine (PPD), the risk of severe reaction increases. This seemingly sudden allergic reaction can mean a visit to the emergency room with hives, dizziness, fainting, stomach pain and cramping. Unfortunately, as noted by a couple of the following experiences, (although rare) severe allergic reaction can even cost you your life.

Black Henna Warning From Canada that All Should Heed

Black Henna Warning From Canada that All Should Heed –by L.J. O’Neal, writer.Canadian Black Henna Warning
-concurs with U.S. FDA and CDC1warnings

On several occasions I’ve shared information regarding the dangers of hair dye that contains para-phenlenediamine (PPD). For emphasis, I’m sharing what the Canadian government has stated on their website, Healthy Canadians. While the focus is on henna tattoos, it also is applicable to hair dye being sold as, Black Henna (mixed with PPD and other chemicals).

Black Henna Warning From Canada that All Should Heed –by L.J. O’Neal, writer. What is Black Henna?

“Black Henna can be sold as a black ink or as a mix of black coloring and natural henna. Black henna is sometimes mixed with hair dye that contains para-phenlenediamine (PPD). Cosmetic products containing PPD that are put directly on the skin (like temporary tattoos) can cause serious allergic reactions. This is why PPD is listed as a restricted ingredient on Canada’s Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist.
Per the website, PPD is not allowed as an ingredient in cosmetic products that are used on the skin. When it’s included in hair dye products, specific warnings and directions for safe use must be displayed on the packaging.

Symptoms of Allergic Reaction to PPD

Note that the potential for serious allergic reaction increases with every use of any hair dye containing PPD. In other words, you can go years without an incident; then a serious allergic reaction can occur somewhat suddenly. There are many similar experiences of sufferers all over the globe.

According to Healthy Canadians2, “You may not react the first time you come in contact with PPD. But future exposure (when using hair dye, for example) can lead to an allergy. Allergic reactions to PPD can occur 1 to 14 days following contact with skin. Reactions usually occur where the product was applied, and may include: redness, rashes, itching, blisters, swelling, pain.

Serious reactions can include: hives (swollen, pale red bumps on the skin); dizziness; fainting; stomach pain and cramping.”*

The 'Black Henna' name is misused for skin (tattoo) and hair dye products, are not only derived from the plant, but a combination of chemical dye mixed with natural, usually low-grade plants made into a black powder or liquid dye.”

Other Facts About the Hair Product Called: ‘Black Henna’

  • 'Black Henna' Hair Dye is a Misnomer
  • 'Black Henna' hair dye is not pure, nor is it pure henna. Pure henna is not black. If pure henna is mixed with para-phenylenediamine (PPD), 'coal tar', it is no longer pure henna, but is a harmful chemical hair dye that can cause severe allergic contact dermatitis and even be deadly.
  • 'Black Henna' hair dye is usually composed of poor quality henna mixed with dangerous chemicals; some proven to be quite toxic, such as: para-phenylenediamine (PPD) and more.
  • 'Black Henna' Hair Dye is advertised as being high quality, beneficial and safe; this can be confusing to the unaware consumer.
  • 'Black Henna' hair dye can ruin your hair and skin permanently.
  • 'Black Henna' is not pure indigo or 'black indigo'; the indigo plant is not black. If indigo is mixed with chemicals dyes, or even henna that has been compromised by chemicals, including PPD, then it is not pure indigo or the so-called, 'black henna'. It is a harmful chemical hair dye.

Black Henna Warning From Canada that All Should Heed –by L.J. O’Neal, writer.
Don’t Confuse ‘Black Henna’ with Natural Henna

When thinking of the product commonly imported and sold as ‘Black Henna’, please don’t confuse it with Lustrous Henna in Soft Black. These are two totally different products, one is potentially dangerous; the other is actually beneficial and healthy.

“Natural henna is a red-brown color. It is made from the dried leaves of the Lawsonia plant. When applied to the skin, henna can leave a brown, orange-brown or reddish-brown tint. Natural henna is generally save to use directly on skin.

Some coloring ingredients added to natural henna are also safe. It is sometimes mixed with lemon and eucalyptus oil. This can change the shade and how long it lasts on the skin. Natural henna can be sold as: powder, paste or liquid.”2

Hibiscus Flower in Conditioning Herbal Shampoo Powder Benefits

Hibiscus Flower in Conditioning Herbal Shampoo Powder Benefits -by L.J. O’Neal, writer. Hibiscus Flower (Rosa-Sinensis)
-a Beautiful History

Eye-catching hibiscus flowers have been highly admired for their beauty since ancient times. They are used as hair decorations, as well as decorative ornaments in the home and numerous locations throughout tropical countries.

The Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is the national flower of Malaysia. According to the American Hibiscus Society, this variety is the tropical hibiscus that is the state flower of Hawai’i and is regularly observed by and presented to tourists visiting the US state. Another Hawaiian tropical hibiscus fact: there are seven known species of tropical hibiscus regarded as native to Hawai’i.

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, more commonly known as the Chinese hibiscus, China rose and Shoe flower, is an evergreen flowering shrub native to East Asia. The flowers are large, generally red in the original varieties, and firm, but generally lack any scent. Numerous varieties and hybrids are available, with flower colors ranging from white through yellow and orange to scarlet and shades of pink, (and some reds so dark they appear to be black). Flowers have both single and double sets of petals. *
