Trending Health Alert -Hair Dye for Children and Teens

Trending Health Alert -Hair Dye for Children and Teens –by L.J. O’Neal, writer.Trending Health Alert:
Chemical Hair Dye Potentially Harmful for Children and Teens

This warning bears repeating over and over again. Permanent and most semi-permanent dyes contain harmful chemicals that have been proven to cause adverse damage to an adult scalp and hair shaft. Obviously, the potential for damage is even more severe to the developing skin and hair shaft of a young, preteen child!

According to numerous dermatological and other medical reports hair dye allergy is on the rise. An article in the British Medical Journal1reported that in Japan, Denmark and USA, hair color use has increased among male and female youth. “Severe hair dye reactions among children have recently been reported.”2,3

FDA and WebMD -Hair Dye Use Can Cause Severe Allergy

According to the FDA
, adults using chemical hair dyes have suffered serious problems such as: hair loss, burning, redness, itchy or raw skin, swelling in the face, trouble breathing, permanent scarring and more.

There also have been several young dermatological patients that have suffered terrible skin reactions from chemical hair color dyes containing harsh ingredients such as Para-Phenylenediamine (PPD), coal tar, peroxide, ammonia and much more.  There are also studies that link prolonged use of such dyes to cancer.

WebMD states the following information for adult women:

“The decision to change your hair color may be a hard one. Some studies have linked hair dyes with a higher risk of certain cancers, while other studies have not found this link. Most hair dyes also don't have to go through safety testing that other cosmetic color additives do before hitting store shelves. Women are often on their own trying to figure out whether hair dyes are safe.

When hair dyes first came out, the main ingredient in coal-tar hair dye caused allergic reactions in some people. Most hair dyes are now made from petroleum sources. But FDA still considers them to be coal-tar dyes. This is because they have some of the same compounds found in these older dyes.”1

Hair Dye Allergy Lesson Learned from an Actor

Hair Dye Allergy Lesson Learned from an Actor –by L.J. O’Neal, writer. Hair Dye Allergy is a Health Risk to Avoid

Several weeks ago a highly publicized news story focused on the dangers of repeatedly using chemical hair dye.  An actor from the popular TV show, NCIS, suffered a severe allergic reaction after attempting to dye her hair black with a chemical hair dye she had used on several occasions. Actor, Pauley Perrette is warning her hundreds of thousands of fans about the risks of using chemical hair dyes, especially darker colors.

Click the link to view the video from CBS Los Angeles detailing
Ms. Perrette’s hair dye misfortune and health warning.

Chemical Hair Dye -Possible Side Effects

According to the FDA, American Cancer Society, CDC, NIH, National Cancer Institute -and a plethora of other consumer organizations

  • Cause allergic reactions including redness, rashes, sores, burning sensations, itching and headaches.
  • Be a possible carcinogen after oxidation, linked to increasing the occurrence of various forms of cancer such as: non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Multiple myeloma, Breast Cancer, Leukemia, Bladder Cancer.
Additionally, a report (08/2007) from leading chemical company DuPont, regarding the dangers of para-phenylenediamine (PPD) in hair dye is well-documented in the Material Safety Data Sheet. (MSDS number: 1155CR) Unfortunately, this document is no longer available online. You must contact DuPont and request it.
See also: Facts about skin allergies from the New Zealand Dermatological Society, Inc.

Please give serious thought to this information about possible side effects of chemical hair dye.

Ms. Perrette is now searching for an all-natural hair dye that is completely safe. That’s a wise decision. You can make the wise choice, too: use all-natural plant-based hair dye and be safe.

The Flower Power of the Kariyat Plant

The Flower Power of the Kariyat Plant by L.J. O’Neal, writer.Flower Power from India with Kariyat

Flowers all over the world have been known to possess medicinal powers since ancient times. Today, many natural flowering plants can still contribute to our well-being. Let’s consider another flower of India and its medicinal attributes: Kariyat.

Kariyat Botany

Botanical name: Andrographis paniculata. Hindi Name: Kariyat, Kalpanath. Common Name in English: Green chirayta, creat, king of bitters, andrographis, India Echinacea
Kariyat is an annual herb with an extremely bitter taste in every part of the plant. It is also known as ‘Maha-tita’, meaning literally ‘king of bitters’. In fact, it is one of the most bitter plants used in traditional medicine. It grows to a height of one to four feet in moist shady places. It has smooth leaves and white flowers with rose-purple spots on the petals.

Flower Power of Kariyat in Natural Medicine

Kariyat has been used to boost the immune system. The extract has also been used to dry nasal passages of cold sufferers. It also is believed to possess the following properties: antibiotic, antimalarial, antihepatatic, antithrombogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-snake venom and antipyretic. Additionally, in Siddha medicine, it is widely used, traditionally to treat chikenguinea, swine-flu and typhoid fevers. Note the following quote:*

“Since ancient times, A. paniculata is used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic systems of medicine as well as in tribal medicine in India and some other countries for multiple clinical applications.

The herb has a number of purported medicinal uses, although research has found evidence of its effectiveness is limited to treatment of upper respiratory infection, ulcerative colitis and rheumatic symptoms; in particular, there is no evidence of its effectiveness in cancer treatment.

According to the Mayo Clinic Book of Alternative Medicine, "A specific product (andrographis combined with Eleutherococcus senticosus) may shorten the duration and lessen the symptoms of common cold." It also says, "Pregnant women shouldn't use andrographis because it could terminate pregnancy."

In one Chilean study from 1999, the herb had a significant drying effect on the nasal secretions of cold sufferers who took 1,200 milligrams of andrographis extract daily for five days. A 2012 study suggested that Andrographis paniculata extracts may have the potential to be used as a mosquito repellant. A 2006 study reported that extracts of Andrographis exhibited potent anti-inflammatory effects and antioxidant actions in mice.”
Now that’s serious flower power!
This is just one flowering plant with lots of power. Consider another one with proven effectiveness for healthy hair care: pure henna for hair. Receive healthy natural dying power with Lustrous Henna®. Totally natural and totally safe to use for all men and women.

Thinning Hair Helped by Nature

Thinning Hair Helped by Nature –by L.J. O’Neal, writer.Thinning Hair Helped by Nature, How?

I’ve tried the following hair treatments from nature with very good results for my own thinning hair. These are ancient hair treatments that have been proven to improve the condition of the hair shaft; thus encouraging the growth of healthier hair. I am not alone. Countless other men and women have experienced similar results.

Thin Hair Treatment: Castor Seed Oil

Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil is a natural emollient that penetrates the surface layers of the skin, making it softer and supple. Perfect for dry feet and heels or other excessively dry skin areas. Flower power benefits to the hair and scalp: prevents dry scalp; moisturizes hair and eliminates dry hair; deep conditions hair and scalp; thickens thin hair; prevents and reduces hair breakage and damage; increases hair growth; adds fullness and shine to hair; prevents and stops split ends (when applied on hair ends); stops frizziness; improves hair health.
Application:  Cold Pressed and Cold Processed Castor oil is very thick and its scent might not be as pleasing to the senses as other oils, but its benefits of its flower power for your scalp and skin will definitely please you. Some prefer to mix it with other oils, to thin out the consistency. You can also choose to do the following.
Oil your scalp with cold processed castor oil to total 2-4 tbsp., depending on scalp area. It's okay to touch the roots but, try to avoid getting castor oil into to the rest of hair (since it can be hard to wash out if entire head is saturated). Gently massage oil into scalp. Do this prior to using Lustrous Henna® Dry Shampoo Powder.

Thin Hair Treatment: Phaseolus Aureus (Mung Bean)

The mung bean contains anti-oxidants and  vitamin E.  As a beauty treatment, it’s been used to smooth skin, stop acne and blackheads, body slimming and -to fertilize hair. Traditionally throughout Asia, pregnant mothers  have comsumed mung bean because it is believed to ensure that the baby will have thick hair. This is due to the fact that body and hair cells depend on good nutrients, like the rich protein and vitamin B1 found in mung bean, as well as calcium and phosphorus for strong bones.
Application:  You can find mung beans at Asia groceries. You can also find it ready to use, in combination with other flowering plants, known to improve hair condition and radiance. No need to hunt and search very far for this ancient hair thickener mix. Simply pick up a package of Lustrous Henna® Shampoo Powder. It not only contains the powerful benefits of this amazing botanical, but Lustrous Henna® Shampoo Powder also includes other totally natural hair-enriching conditioners, as well.

Thin Hair Treatment: Methi (Fenugreek)

Methi (fenugreek) seeds are and excellent natural hair treatment for follicular issues. It is a great source of protein that penetrates the hair shaft and then fills the hair shaft with moisture and enhances hair growth. This also aids in reducing baldness and prevents hair loss, (hair fall) or thinning of the hair.  Methi seeds also contain high levels of lecithin. Lecithin is a natural emollient that gives strength and moisture to hair. The oils in methi seeds nourish the scalp and aids in preventing and stopping dandruff. Combined with other natural raw ingredients, it is excellent for deep conditioning of the hair.
Application: Coconut Methi Hair Mask
½ cup of methi seeds (not too much due to strong smell –will dissipate later)
2 ½ cups (or more) water
2 tablespoons pure virgin coconut oil
Pure Amla Powder
3 or 4 drops natural infused oil (rose, lavender, chamomile)
Make a paste by soaking methi (fenugreek) seeds overnight in water; in the morning, strain fenugreek seeds; in a mixer/grinder jar, grind with enough water to make into a paste. Add 2- 3 tablespoons of Pure Amla Powder, coconut oil and other oil drops and mix thoroughly. Apply mixture to scalp, then rest of hair. Cover with plastic cap and leave on for 30 minutes or longer. Rinse out gently with cool water.
Follow with natural conditioning shampoo, such as Lustrous Henna Shampoo Powder, Pure Shikakai Powder or Imbue Shampoo and Conditioner.

Protect Your Curls as the Seasons Change

Protect Your Curls as the Seasons Change –by L.J. O’Neal, writer.

How to Protect Your Curls

As the seasons change from summer to autumn to winter, your curls still need protection. Curly hair needs the same kind of hair that our skin needs throughout the year. Therefore, protect your curls, using the following tips.

Protect Your Curls By:

Keeping hydrated internally. Drink plenty of water. Nourish your hair like you nourish your skin. In other words, eat a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables. This will help to keep your hair soft and lustrous. Hydrate for proper skin care and hair care.

Locking in moisture.Curly hair care tip: condition daily (rinse in cooler water to seal in moisture), also use a light homemade leave-in conditioner: simply add enough water to current conditioner, mix well, spray a little in your hand and rub through hair or spritz on hair with a spray bottle; avoid cleansing shampoos that strip and cause extra dryness and frizziness. Shampoo less often with mild shampoo or try a conditioner-only wash (co-wash).

Taking Cooler Showers and Baths. Hot water in cooler weather dries out skin and hair.

Protect Your Curls as the Seasons Change –by L.J. O’Neal, writer.Using Sun Protection. This is especially important in cooler weather for both skin care and hair care. The sun can fade hair color quicker.

Staying protected from harsh fabrics. Direct contact with warm, but harsh fabrics (like wool) can cause drying and curly hair (and straight) breakage.

Curly Hair Care Tip:

a. iVillage writer, Sascha Breuer, suggested the following hat idea for hair care: When you're out and about this winter, wear a hat, not only to keep you warm but also to protect your hair from the cold weather. Invest in a hat made of cashmere rather than wool, as wool is very absorbent and will suck the moisture out of your hair, leaving it dry and prone to static. Also, the raw texture of wool is harsh on your hair while cashmere will ensure that it stays looking beautifully smooth and silky when you come in from the cold.
Not going outside with wet, unprotected hair in winter. You wouldn’t walk outside in winter with naked and wet skin (unless you’re a “little freaky” Polar Bear Club member), so why go outside in the middle of winter with naked and wet hair? Ice does not belong on your hair! It will snap it right off.

Curly Hair Care Tip:

a. Cover your dry hair with a scarf, or hat, beret, cap that is satin or silk-lined (you can make these linings yourself or have someone else do it –sew or glue)* If you don’t like hats, try an updo, pulled back in a bun and snood or use clips to hold your hair down to protect scalp from sun.

b. Letting your hair dry naturally is best in winter. Make sure your hair is totally dry before going outside. If this is not possible, cover your hair with a hair-friendly head covering. Remove when you reach your destination and let air-dry.

NOT turning up the heat. For skin care, we can add humidity to a room to avoid extreme dryness. For hair care, it’s really best to avoid heated appliances altogether if we’re willing to go that route. However, if we simply can’t deal with the results then: Use an ionizing heat appliance to reduce heat damage. Point the device away from your scalp, thus avoiding damage to the hair cuticle. Prior to drying, flat ironing or using heated rollers, etc. apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner or thermal heat protection cream to hair. Keep heat on medium to low and use a heat diffuser on blow dryers.

We all love our 100% natural curly hair. Now is the time for 100% curly hair protection.

“Thank you Syed for the time you spent with me on the telephone, giving me different ideas for my hair color…I love the way my hair came out!! It’s evident to me that you truly care about your customers. I will definitely recommend your products to my friends and clients.”

Henna Hair Dye Benefits That’s More than Just Natural Color

Henna Hair Dye Benefits That’s More than Just Natural Color –by L.J. O’Neal, writer.Traditional Henna Hair Dye Benefits
Henna hair dye colors hair by coating the hair shaft. It provides thickness to hair and adheres as a semi-permanent color. It’s an excellent gray hair cover. Each successive application does the same thing each time; resulting in increased strength and shine to your hair. With continued use, henna hair dye restores the acid/alkaline balance in the scalp. Damaged hair begins to heal and strands are protected from further damage and excessive dryness. Additionally, henna has been used for centuries as an effective aid to treat and prevent dandruff.
Chemical hair dye is proven inferior to the benefits of natural plant-based hair dye and extremely harmful to hair. Thus, henna highly recommended by dermatologists and health agencies (even the FDA of the United States).
The Henna for Hair Possible ‘Deal-Breaker’
Even though pure henna by itself is a natural hair dye, solely using pure henna for hair dye produces a red hair shade that is not very attractive. Traditional henna application generally produces a bright, bright red hair! Actually, the hair dye produces a red-orange or orange-red color (take your pick). Do you really want bright red-orange hair?
Also, traditional henna application can take several hours, sometimes a full day to achieve the desired results. This is because you must wait hours for the hair dye to release after mixing the powder. Then wait longer after application of the hair dye for complete henna hair color results.
Henna Hair Dye Benefits That’s More than Just Natural Color –by L.J. O’Neal, writer.Lustrous Henna® Natural Hair Dye Superior Benefits
Using Lustrous Henna® natural hair dye is even superior to using plain henna. The result: healthier hair benefits for men and women.
Lustrous Henna® natural hair dye is a mixture of: pure, highly sifted herbal henna, indigo leaf powder and other herbal extracts and powders. Dark hair colors are naturally achieved resulting in excellent black hair color, dark brown hair color, brown hair color and many more, along with excellent gray hair coverage.
Like traditional henna, semi-permanent, Lustrous Henna® natural hair dye also works as a natural hair conditioner and helps with hair growth.
Other Benefits of Lustrous Henna®:

• blocks UV sun damage • protects against split ends • adheres to hair beautifully • looks like your natural hair shade • color fades gradually and doesn’t create ugly white/gray lines with growth • conditions and protects hair, instead of stripping hair from the natural protein it needs to stay healthy and grow • contain herbs that have therapeutic values, will heal not harm hair like chemical dye • does not penetrate in the hair shaft to cause dry brittle, hair • makes hair glossy, shiny and of course, lustrous.
Lustrous Henna® -Application Made EasierNo ‘Deal-Breakers’
The traditional henna application is no longer a tedious waiting game. The quicker application process of Lustrous Henna® hair dye is a real time saver when compared to traditional henna application method. It usually takes -only about 90 minutes- from start to finish. Lustrous Henna® natural hair dye is easy to apply: just boil, mix and apply for beautiful color.
Want more benefits than just natural hair color? Avoid ‘deal-breakers’ and choose your next henna hair dye wisely.

Natural Hair Dye that Covers Your Gray Hair -Safely

Natural Hair Dye that Covers Gray Hair Safely-You’re Worth It.

I have osteoarthritis. Instead of working out in the gym, using a treadmill or walking for exercise: I work out in a pool, doing aqua aerobics and water jogging. As long as I work out in the water, I have freedom of movement and I love it. *

So what does this have to do with natural hair dye that covers gray hair? Many people are afraid to try alternative treatments or therapies even when the benefits are clearly apparent. However, usually they find that they not only are very satisfied with the results, but also can’t imagine their life without it!

The same is very true when coloring gray hair naturally.  Since gray hair is sometimes resistant to 'change', some folks prefer to take their chances with chemical hair dye. They choose to ignore the warnings, believing that ‘nothing will happen to me...I've been dying my hair for years.'

Unfortunately, many have suffered severe damage to their scalp and hair, even after years of chemical hair dye use. It happened to me and I have a scar at the nape of my neck to remind me of the harm that chemical dye can cause. Fortunately, I've made the effort to color my gray hair with a natural, plant-based, henna hair dye and my whole head of hair is thankful for it. The effort is definitely worth it.

Natural Hair Dye that Covers Your Gray Hair –Safely, by L.J. O’Neal, writer.
Ron loves Lustrous Henna for his gray hair coverage.

Color Your Gray Hair Naturally and Safely

Lustrous Henna® hair dye is 100% All Natural. It’s nontoxic, contains no chemicals such as para-phenlenediamine (PPD). Lustrous Henna® also does not contain ammonia, peroxide, or other synthetic dyes. It is the natural herbal solution to cover gray hair.

It Works for Me!

Lustrous Henna® hair dye has worked wonderfully for my resistant grays. It's a henna hair dye that's quick to apply when compared to traditional henna applications. I have black hair with silver gray edges on my front hairline, with a silver streak that I've inherited.

I confess that sometimes I have to use a second application of Lustrous Henna® hair dye to get these stubborn grays completely covered. Other times, I’ll stay under the hair dryer for about 30 minutes longer. This way, my grays are totally covered for about 3-5 weeks, depending on how fast my hair grows. Even, when the Lustrous Henna® hair dye fades, it’s not a harsh look before I cover it again. Let color by nature, color your hair, too. You are so worth it!

Healthy Hair Food From Your Kitchen –by L.J. O’Neal, writer.

Grow Healthy Hair from Simple Foods

Healthy eating is absolutely essential for healthy hair growth. Fill your kitchen with foods you buy at your local grocery, then EAT THEM UP.

With a healthy diet, you can give your hair vital nutrients that will promote a full head of healthy hair.  On an average, hair will grow ¼ to ½ inch each month. Give your hair growth a boost. Want stronger hair? Then, work on growing healthier and stronger cells through your nutritious diet.

Strong Hair Growth is…

Strong hair growth is full of keratin. Make sure your body receives and produces keratin naturally by healthy eating: protein-rich foods like nuts, seeds, low fat dairy products, lean meats, fish and egg whites.

Natural Beauty with Orange Peel –Beneficial Skin Treatment –by L.J. O’Neal, writer.Acne Treatment Face Mask
(deep cleans skin and unclogs pores)

Mix all powders together. Take just a couple tablespoons of this mixture and add enough water to make a paste. Apply to face and neck. Work gently in circular motion when applying paste, especially to nose and chin area. Leave on for 15 minutes, and then gently wash off with cool water. Save dry mixture in air-tight container or zip-lock bag and store until needed.

Full Body Mask for Natural Beauty

Mix all ingredients to form a paste. Slather on (especially on back and chest areas) and leave for 15-20 minutes. Gently rinse off.
Important Note: Please avoid contact with area around the eye, if doing a face mask. Also, do a small patch test to make sure you are not allergic to any ingredients, prior to applying mask to entire area.
The amount of ingredients contained in the above recipes are approximately enough to do smaller areas of the body (enough for face and neck area –except where noted). It's perfectly okay to add a little more or use a little less of any ingredient. To use for hands and feet, you will need to increase recipe proportionately with the area you want to cover.
Above all, have fun, relax and enjoy the natural beauty treatment with Orange Peel.
