The Indigo Plant, an Ancient Hair Coloring Beauty Secret

Indigo-plant-flowering-saba-botanicalThe Indigo Plant, Botanical History

The botanical name for the indigo plant is Indigofera Tinctoria. Other synonyms are true indigo, pigmentum indicum, neel and neelii.

The indigo plant is actually a leafy shrub that grows 3-6 feet tall with magenta-colored flowers.

The indigo
plant has been used since ancient times as in natural dyes. It was used by men and women to dye textiles and hair. Indigo dye is made from processing the plant’s leaves by soaking them in water and allowing them to ferment. This converts the natural glycoside indicant into the dye, indigotin. It can then be pressed into cakes, dried and powdered.

All-natural-beauty.www.sababotanical.comIn natural dyes (for hair coloring), the green leaves of the indigo plant are dried, crushed and powdered. When used properly with pure henna, indigo dye will create shades ranging from brown to jet black color. It also makes hair soft and silky to the touch.

Pure henna powder and indigo dye from the crushed leaves of the indigo plant have been used for centuries to make a jet black henna hair dye. Both are currently available for anyone desiring natural dyes for hair coloring made in the traditional manner.

What Pure Indigo is NOT:

It is not the so-call misnomer, “Black Henna” hair dye.

"Black Henna" is not pure indigo dye or "black" indigo. If henna and indigo are mixed with chemicals dyes, or any henna hair dye that has been compromised by chemicals, including PPD, then: it is not pure henna, pure indigo or pure anything. Stay far away from mislabeled, “Black Henna” hair dye. It is not 100% all natural indigo dye. It is not 100% all natural hair dye.

Lustrous Henna® Hair Coloring in Soft Black Shade -is NOT the mysterious “Black Henna”.

The soft black hair coloring shade is derived from mixing pure henna (from the henna plant) with the extracts of pure indigo plant leaves and other botanicals found in nature. Lustrous Henna® is completely para-phenylenediamine-free (PPD-free hair dye); also, ammonia-free, peroxide-free. Lustrous Henna® remains in its natural herbal form (a natural hair dye powder).

To avoid confusion, always make sure of the company’s reputation that you are dealing with, since there are no regulations in many countries, including India, for ingredients labels. For this reason, “Black Henna” hair dye usually contains even higher concentrations of PPD than many commercial hair dyes sold in the USA. Sadly many individuals think that when they purchase this product, it is pure indigo dye (or pure indigo only mixed with pure henna) and the results have led to sad consequences and also some dermatologic horror stories.

When you want natural dyes for hair coloring or pure indigo powder,
Make sure what you buy is:
Pure indigo powder and totally natural dyes like Lustrous Henna® Hair Coloring.

Breathing Exercises Can Help Stop Hair Loss. How?

Reduce Stress and Stop Hair Loss.Breathing Exercises and Hair Loss

Hair loss can be caused by a number of factors. However, a leading cause of hair loss is undue stress and anxiety that can lead to a chain-like cycle: {worry-poor eating habits-worry-lack of exercise–worry - poor hair care-worry}. Do you see the connection? The need to reduce stress is vital -for not only a healthy body, but essential for hair loss prevention, as well.

What is Stress?

According to Kim Lebowitz, PhD, “Stress is two things. Anything that poses a challenge or a threat to our well-being is a stress. Stresses can be positive or negative… Then we also have the way that we respond to that challenge -- that's also called stress.” 1

Why Reduce Stress?

Unhealthy stress is a ‘global epidemic’, states the World Health Organization2. Negative stress can lead to disastrous health consequences, even death. Therefore, the effort to reduce stress will have beneficial results to your health and overall well-being.

Diaphragm breath
Reduce Stress with Breathing Exercises

Breathing exercises such as diaphragmatic breathing are extremely beneficial to the body. It not only is a way to reduce stress, which in turn can stop hair loss, but it gives you energy! This type of breathing improves the body’s ability to relax by strengthening the diaphragm and abdominal muscles. It also improves lung function. Try it and you will be able to practice diaphragmatic breathing just about anywhere –even at work.  Diaphragmatic_breathing recommended by www.SabaBotanical.com

Diaphragmatic Breathing Exercise

A common diaphragmatic breathing exercise3 is as follows:

  1. Sit or lie comfortably, with loose garments.
  2. Put one hand on your chest and one on your stomach.
  3. Slowly inhale through your nose.
  4. Exhale through pursed lips to slow down the exhalation and try to slowly release most air out of the body
  5. Repeat previous two steps

Alternative Breathing Techniques

Pranayama3 is the study of breath taught in the practice of yoga and Ayurvedic tradition.

Prana is defined as: “Life sustaining energy centered in the human brain; the first of the five airs of Ayurvedic philosophy; the life force governing inspiration and the conscious intellect.”4 Breathing Exercises include: Alternative Nostril Breathing, Kapalabhati Breathing, Sitali Breathing and a number of other exercises that help reduce stress of mind and body.

Take good care of your mind and body…your hair will love you for it!

Chronic Stress? How to Massage Your Scalp to Prevent Hair Loss.

eat healthy foods.Avoid Chronic Stress and Hair Loss: Three Essential Keys.

To ensure that your hair grows healthy, you must eat a well-balanced diet of healthy foods and follow a good exercise routine. However, to stimulate the cells and blood flow, a daily basic scalp massage along with a weekly deep scalp massage is absolutely essential. Get in the habit and you’ll find that along with the benefits of healthy growing hair, chronic stress will also be reduced. Reduce chronic stress = Reduced hair loss. So let’s start with basic scalp massage.

Basic scalp massageBasic Scalp Massage

  • Beginning with the top of your forehead, use your fingertips and gently rub your hairline, forming little circles. Continue the circular massage along the sides toward the back of your head.
  • Massage in the small circular motion from the back nape of your neck up to the crown of your head, ending in the front -where you started.
  • Only 10 minutes twice a day are needed (morning/night) and a daily consistent routine.
  • btw: Even though the picture shows differently, you can massage your own scalp.
Conditioning Massage
  • Beat 2 eggs with 2 tablespoons of water. Apply to WET hair. While egg mixture is on your hair, perform the basic circular scalp massage. Leave mixture on for another 10-15 minutes. Rinse hair with lukewarm water, followed by Lustrous Henna Dry Shampoo Powder (made into a paste). Cover hair with plastic cap.  Leave shampoo powder on hair for 5 minutes and rinse out. This will help prevent dandruff and hair loss.
  • Soak two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water at bedtime. In the morning, grind up the softened seeds into a paste. Apply paste to scalp and hair. Cover with plastic cap for 30 minutes. Rinse out paste. Follow up with Pure Shikakai Powder or Pure Reetha Powder Organic Wash.

Hot Oil Hair Massage Therapy

Before going to bed (or anytime you have an extra 6-8 hours to wear a plastic cap), massage hot oil into your scalp (Be careful not to make it too hot-should still be able to touch it without scalding your fingers).  It can be almond, coconut, EEVO (extra-virgin olive oil or any other oil known for promoting healthy hair growth. The only exception might be castor oil, which due to its thickness, is best applied to the scalp and hair roots only.

Cover hair with a plastic cap or wrap and hair bonnet/scarf. (Sleep on a towel to protect pillow from possible leaking). In the morning, (before bathing) mix a little lemon juice and acv (apple cider vinegar) together and apply it to your scalp, dabbing with a soft cloth.  Leave on for about 5 minutes and rinse out. Wash hair with Lustrous Henna Dry Shampoo Powder (made into a paste). Cover hair with plastic cap. Leave shampoo powder on hair for 5 minutes and rinse out. This will also help prevent dandruff and hair loss.

Men: Eat Healthy food for Healthy Hair.Be Consistent In Your Hair Care Routine

You will see wonderful results over the next few weeks. You can avoid chronic stress and hair loss simply by sticking to a healthy diet, a good exercise routine and following the above tips on scalp massage.

Egg Yolks for Healthy Hair – 'Old' Remedies Meet 'New'

Egg-yolk-for hair. www.sababotanical.comWhy are Egg Yolks Beneficial for Healthy Hair?

According to international holistic hair educator, Mary Beth Janssen, eggs:
  • Strengthen and moisturize hair with lecithin and protein.
  • Protein in eggs also helps prevent breakage’
  • Relieves dandruff due to high sulfur content in eggs.
  • Natural emulsifier in egg yolks bind other hair recipe ingredients together smoothly.
For healthy hair, egg home remedies have been used for decades to deep condition, add volume and give luster to hair. Some women even use egg home remedies as a natural relaxer for curly or unruly hair and to promote lustrous, shiny hair.

Henna Hair Dye –Clearing Up a Few Misconceptions

Questions, Misconceptions Cleared. www.SabaBotanical.comHenna Hair Dye Misconceptions

Recently, I was reading about what real people thought about henna hair dye and whether or not it would be good to use to color your hair. Here are a few comments that have been summarized to save space (later, I’ll attempt to clear up the misconceptions about henna hair dye):

1.     “Henna usually leaves a reddish tint to your hair and it's super messy. It’s hard to remove. It can damage hair.”

2.     “There is a reason why Henna is not offered in most salons.”
3.    “True legit henna only comes in red or black. There is not a blonde henna. If it contains a bottle of developer, it is not henna. Most brands (commercial grade) of henna have metallic compounds in them that react to chemicals in regular hair dye.”

Number one is partially true.
Henna does leave a reddish/orange tint to hair. It can be very messy to apply, but preparing the area before application, cuts down on a messy application. Pure henna does not damage hair but actually conditions it. It’s extremely rare for someone to be allergic to pure henna. Usually, if hair is damaged, henna was not totally natural but was mixed with chemicals such as, para-phenylenediamine (PPD) or metallic salts. It’s extremely important to buy henna from a reputable company.

Number two is a little ambiguous.
However, I will try to give the ‘reason’. Traditional henna application is an extremely lengthy process, and most hairdressers don’t have the time to apply the henna, and then wait a few hours before washing out. Another reason could be education. Instead of becoming educated henna hair dye application, some stylist prefer to shy away from discovering if there are faster methods or other totally natural henna mixes that can speed up application. Sadly, henna is sold that is mixed with para-phenylenediamine (PPD) and metallic salts; this can be extremely damaging to hair and the stylist and customer might come to the sad conclusion that ALL henna hair dye is harmful.

Number three is partially true.
Pure henna comes from the henna plant and in powder form it is green. Pure henna produces a red-orange color on most hair, never black. To produce natural black color, other natural plant dyes or stains need to be added to the henna powder, such as pure indigo.  There is a blonde henna, however it’s made with extract from henna stems, mixed with other plants like cassia obovata to produce blonde to golden shades (from SabaBotanical.com). Unfortunately, many companies sell henna as a botanical hair dye, but contains harmful chemicals, including para-phenylenediamine (PPD) and metallic salts that can cause horrible allergic reaction and damage to hair and skin. This practice has led to much confusion about pure henna and henna hair dye application.

Product Reviews: Lustrous Henna® Soft Black

“I just LOVE this product because it is the ONLY product I can use because I am totally allergic to any other hair coloring product. Please never discontinue this product. You are my only life line for not having gray hair. The product was shipped very timely. It covered all my gray and I have no complaints with it. Thanks again for making such a great product.” - Denise M., Tomahawk, WI, USA  “I am using the product for last 3 years and completely satisfied. Excellent products and best substitutes for those who cannot use chemical and allergic dyes.” – A.K. Sharma, Sacramento, CA   USA

 Product Review: Lustrous Henna® Brown

“I was initially afraid of switching from chemical dye to henna, because I was worried it would make my greys carrot orange... but after trying Saba's products, I'm hooked. While the greys are a slightly lighter shade than my non greys, it is a nice natural tone. Whereas hair dye covers over the highlights you have in your natural hair color, light-reflective henna reveals the beautiful highlights you already possess. The most important reason to henna: for your health, and that of the planet. Hair dye adds an unnecessary toxic load to your body. I arrived at henna because I had a case of poison oak that would not go away. Under the orders of a naturopath I looked to all culprits. The black dye I was using in my hair was high in PPD -- a bad chemical. Google it and you will read horror stories. LSS, I will never chemical dye again. Thank you Saba for making such a healthy, beautiful product.” - Jessica S., Fairfax, CA. USA

Product Review: Lustrous Henna® Dark Brown

“I just applied my Lustrous Henna yesterday. I then went out to lunch with my 16 year old son and was asked if he was my brother! Your product has made my hair shiny and soft. It gives my white hairs a beautiful reddish highlight and seems to have knocked about 10 years off my real age. I am assuming they meant a much older sister, just not old enough to be his mother. Seriously, I have tried this product before, and I do have to apply it more frequently than others since I wash my hair every other day. It does leave my hair with beautiful shine, highlights, and volume, better than anything else, and it is gentle. I will just have to get used to applying it about once a month, because I have a lot of white hair. Thanks for a great product!”  - K Stephens. Aloha, OR. USA
