How to Mix: Cassia Obovata (Senna Leaves Powder) by Saba Botanical of USA

To Deep Condition Hair with Senna Leaves Powder (Cassia Obovata)

This hair conditioning treatment has been used to thicken hair and add shine to hair, naturally. No color deposit will be left on dark hair or lighter-colored hair due to short conditioning period.

• Mix powder with warm water until the paste is the consistency of pancake batter.
• Section your wet or dry hair and apply paste, totally coating hair from ends to roots.
• Wrap hair in plastic wrap and/or shower cap and wait 15-45 minutes.
• Remove plastic wrap and completely rinse paste out of hair
• Follow with Imbue Shampoo to eliminate any remaining residue.

Cassia Obovata (Senna Leaves Powder) may loosen your natural curl pattern. Therefore, if you want your hair to keep its curl pattern, try adding Amla powder (sold by Saba Botanical of USA) to the Senna Leaves Powder before mixing with warm water or milk to define curl pattern.

• Mix Cassia Obovata (Senna Leaves Powder) with warm water until the paste is the consistency of pancake batter.
• Let this paste sit for 3-4 hours, covered.

Put a small amount of pure Senna (Cassia Obovata) on skin and cover with a Band-Aid strip for 24 hours. If a rash appears, you might be allergic to Senna (Cassia Obovata). If you have “hard water” (water with extremely high mineral content), your hair may turn green due to the high mineral content in your water mixed with Cassia Obovata, so it’s extremely important to do a strand test first -if you use a “hard water” plumbing source.

About Cassia Obovata

Cassia Obovata is also called Senna (Senna Obovata). There are over 400 species of the Cassia Obovata plant. The ground powder is made from harvested, dried leaves of the plant. Although it has various medicinal uses, this powder is often used to condition, thicken, define and color the hair.  

Cassia Obovata (Senna) will naturally condition all textures of hair, adding luster and supple definition. It is also known to improve scalp condition and eliminates dandruff. If your natural hair color is blonde or gray, it will brighten and add golden hues and highlights (depending on length of time Senna is left on your hair). If you have dark hair color, you will still reap the deep conditioning benefits found in pure Cassia Obovata (Senna). Cassia Obovata is also safe to use on relaxed, bleached or dyed hair.

About the Misnomer: “Neutral Henna”

Look at the 2 pictures to the left of this sentence. The image on the left is a drawing of the Henna plant. The image on the right is a drawing of the Cassia Obovata plant. Quite a difference, don't you agree?  

Cassia Obovata or Senna is an herb that is frequently marketed as “Neutral Henna”. As noted above, Cassia Obovata has a number of beneficial properties that help condition and soften the hair. However, it is not Henna or made from the Henna plant as is the case with true Neutral Henna.  

According to Wikipedia, “Another Senna, Senna italica ssp. italica (= Cassia obovata), often called "neutral henna", is used as a hair treatment with effects similar to henna but without the red color. The active component is an anthraquinone derivative called chrysophanic acid. It adds a slight yellow color.”

The yellow color is left when the Cassia Obovata (Senna) made into a paste and is left on the hair for long periods of time. The staining and conditioning properties of Cassia Obovata or Senna (similar to Henna staining and conditioning) might be one of the reasons it is often marketed as “neutral henna”.

Hi, my name is Krista and I just wanted to share my experience with using Lustrous Henna ®.

I have naturally curly fine hair that is now 40%gray. I had been dying my hair with the traditional dyes for years. Last year my hair was severely damaged by having a professional put a color remover on my hair to remove old, too dark dye.After the application, my hair was what they call "bubble gum" hair in the industry. I would be happy to write something about my experiences with Lustrous Henna. As you know, when I first ordered from you I indicated that I had never used henna before. I have always used chemical hair dyes. So to say the least using henna was quite challenging. I'm still trying to fine tune my results. However, Lustrous Henna has to be one of the easiest hennas to use. After researching other Hennas I have no doubts that your product is way better than other Hennas out there. There's virtually no soaking compared to regular henna dyes. When I want to do my hair I don't have to soak my henna overnight like other henna products.

When I used chemical hair dyes I would mix the dyes. I thought since I wanted a brown-red hair color that maybe I could also mix different henna colors together to achieve this. From my research I also discovered that many people mix different things in their henna to give them different shades. I learned that by using coffee, or walnut powder you could change the shade you would get from the henna. This seemed a bit extraneous to me. I thought it would be so much easier if I could just mix the different hennas together. So that's what I have been doing and I would say getting good results. The only problem I‘m having is the root area. My hair is pretty much gray so it takes a couple of applications to get the roots to blend with the rest of my hair. Other than that I'm happy with the color results, also the added benefit is the shine you get by using henna, people are always commenting on that, as well as the color.

Did you know that Henna flowers have been used to create perfume since ancient times?

It’s true: Natural henna perfume has experienced resurgence in recent years. Henna flowers are among the most fragrant flowers on earth. Best grown as a tender outdoor container tropical or annual and can be propagated by cuttings or seed. The fragrance is best from a distance when mixed with air.  

In Asian perfumery, the henna flower’s essential oil is obtained from oil seeds that have been drying in the sun for several days with henna flowers thrown upon them. The oils seeds are naturally saturated with the fragrance. The oil is not only used for perfume, but it is used for hair maintenance. Henna flower oil is also massaged onto the face (to improve complexion) and body (to relieve aching muscles).  

The perfume oil, called an attar, is made from distilling the flower petals in water. This steeping process actually allows the delicate fragrance of the flower to mature and last longer than if the oil was alone. The fragrance actually improves with age.

Hi Syed,

I would be happy to write something about my experiences with Lustrous Henna. As you know, when I first ordered from you I indicated that I had never used henna before. I have always used chemical hair dyes. So to say the least using henna was quite challenging. I'm still trying to fine tune my results. However, Lustrous Henna has to be one of the easiest hennas to use. After researching other Hennas I have no doubts that your product is way better than other Hennas out there. There's virtually no soaking compared to regular henna dyes. When I want to do my hair I don't have to soak my henna overnight like other henna products.

When I used chemical hair dyes I would mix the dyes. I thought since I wanted a brown-red hair color that maybe I could also mix different henna colors together to achieve this. From my research I also discovered that many people mix different things in their henna to give them different shades. I learned that by using coffee, or walnut powder you could change the shade you would get from the henna. This seemed a bit extraneous to me. I thought it would be so much easier if I could just mix the different hennas together. So that's what I have been doing and I would say getting good results. The only problem I‘m having is the root area. My hair is pretty much gray so it takes a couple of applications to get the roots to blend with the rest of my hair. Other than that I'm happy with the color results, also the added benefit is the shine you get by using henna, people are always commenting on that, as well as the color.
