Do I Really Need to Do an Allergy Test on an All-Natural Herbal Product Like Lustrous Henna®?

Anyone can be allergic to anything -even natural products that come from Mother Earth. There are several substances found in nature that a person can be allergic to and therefore should avoid using. For example, some people are allergic to peanuts, bananas, mushrooms and the list goes on.

Thus, even though an allergic reaction to pure natural henna (or any of the other ingredients in Lustrous Henna®) is extremely slim, it is still advisable to perform an allergy test.

The following are two ways for performing an allergy test for hair color dyes, including Lustrous Henna® 100% All Natural Hair Color Dye:

Allergy Skin Test
Perform the allergy test at least 48 hours before you dye your hair. Make a paste of a small amount of Lustrous Henna® powder in a cup. Dermatologists suggest that you smear the paste on the inside of your elbow (it's one of the most sensitive parts of your skin). Leave the paste on for at least 24 hours. If you see any redness or itching, do not use the product to dye your hair. 

Hair Strand Test
The strand test is exactly what it sounds like. Choose a hair strand. Make a small amount of Lustrous Henna® dye paste. With gloved hands completely saturate hair with the dye paste. Wrap strand in plastic. Leave it in for the amount of time you'll leave the dye on your head. Wash hair. Check color. The color will slightly darken after 24 hours.

I just wanted to tell you how much I LOVE the Lustrous henna. I've been using it for about 2 years now, and I will never go back to the chemical dyes, for many reasons...

Getting my long hair dyed in a salon cost me well over $100. When I tried to be more economical and do it myself, I would still have to buy two bottles of dye, not to mention processing agents, and special conditioners, and then color safe shampoos and conditioners for after. About Pure Indigo for Hair

Pure Indigo Leaves Powder.  

The botanical name is Indigofera Tinctoria. Other synonyms are true indigo, pigmentum indicum, neel and neelii.

The plant is actually a leafy shrub that grows 3-6 feet tall with magenta-colored flowers.

Indigo has been used since ancient times as a natural dye. It was used by men and women to dye textiles and hair. The dye is made from processing the plant’s leaves by soaking them in water and allowing them to ferment. This converts the natural glycoside indicant into the dye, indigotin. It can then be pressed into cakes, dried and powdered.

As a hair dye, pure indigo is a green plant and the green leaves are dried, crushed and powdered. When used properly with pure henna, it will create shades ranging from brown to jet black color.  It also makes hair soft and silky to the touch.

What Pure Indigo is NOT: 

It is not the so-call misnomer, “Black Henna”. 

"Black Henna" is not pure indigo or "black" indigo. If indigo is mixed with chemicals dyes, or even henna that has been compromised by chemicals, including PPD, then it is not pure indigo or the so-called, "black henna". Stay far away from “Black Henna”.

Lustrous Henna® in Soft Black Shade is NOT “Black Henna”.

The soft black shade is derived from mixing pure henna (from the henna plant) with the extracts of pure indigo and other natural botanicals found in nature.

Lustrous Henna® is completely para-phenylenediamine-free (PPD-free hair dye); also, ammonia-free, peroxide-free.   

Lustrous Henna® remains in its natural herbal form (a powder). 

  To avoid confusion, always make sure of the company’s reputation that you are dealing with, since there are no regulations in many countries, including India, for ingredient labels. For this reason, “Black Henna” dyes usually contain even higher concentrations of PPD than many commercial hair dyes sold in the USA. Sadly many individuals think that when they purchase this product, it is pure indigo (or pure indigo only mixed with pure henna) and the results have led to sad consequences and also some dermatologic horror stories.

I have been using regular hair dyes containing PPD for years and never had a problem, then all of a sudden I had a severe allergic reaction. I had spent several months recovering from this in and out of hospitals, on steroids, antibiotics and IV medications. Heeding the Warning Signs –Not Always an Easy Thing

Most of us love our abodes. Whether we live in an apartment, condo, cozy cottage or mansion, we can become very attached to our home for innumerable reasons. Most of our reasons are quite sound too. Maybe it’s been in our family for generations; or we’ve started from scratch and now have decorated it to our liking; in our dwellings, we’ve raised our families and sadly have even lost loved ones. We love having a place of rest and peace, secure from the outside world. In a nutshell, our heart is involved.

However, what if we had a safety inspection of our home and it was found out that it was no longer healthy for us to live in? We were told that due to a problem with a dangerous substance, if we remained in our beloved home, our very lives and that of our children would be at risk of severe health problems that would plague us for the rest of our lives. What would we do?
What would you do?

It’s not an easy thing to leave beloved possessions behind in order to live in a healthy environment. However, most (if not all) of us would do it after receiving the facts and learning about all the risks.

• Be a possible carcinogen after oxidation, linked to increasing the occurrence of various forms of cancer such as: non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Multiple myeloma, Breast Cancer, Leukemia, Bladder Cancer.

Additionally, a report (08/2007) from leading chemical company DuPont, regarding the dangers of para-phenylenediamine (PPD) in hair dye is well-documented in the Material Safety Data Sheet. (MSDS number: 1155CR) Unfortunately, this document is no longer available online. You must contact DuPont and request it.
