Suffer From Chemical Hair Dye and PPD Allergy? We Feel Your Pain.

Multi-dyed hair Recently, I was reading a few pages of a popular talk show website. I was amazed to see a slew of responses from the past two years to a question a reader had about her own severe reaction to permanent hair color dyes. There were over 200 comments from women who suffered from allergic reaction to permanent chemical dyes, PPD (para-phenylenediamine) and desired an alternative solution. Obviously, space won’t permit me to post all of them on one blog post. So I’ve included three comments to give you an idea of what the sufferer feels. Please continue reading:

“I fully agree … that coloring your hair is a wonderful way to take years off your appearance.
I will soon be 48 years old and have a 7 year old girl - certainly don't want to look like I am her grandmother ! However I have a SEVERE allergy to hair dye…

I figure (…) is the only one who could contact the hair color companies and push for them to find a hypo-allergenic product! My emails to them in the past have been essentially ignored on the subject - however I think there must be other women out there just like me.”
~~~~~~~~~~~
“I too have an allergy to hair dye. I am fed up with having little sores after my hair is colored. I am 43 years old and I am just about completely gray. SAD!! Is there a brand of hair products that doesn't have this PPD.? I really need help. thoughts?”
~~~~~~~~~~~
Hair Loss, PPD Allergy
“I am into a year of suffering due to a PPD allergy. I was recently on Prednisone and within 2 days all the itching is back. I can’t sleep at night.
My neck is a crusty, itchy mess… I've been to the doctor initially, did a round of Prednisone. It came right back. Two weeks ago, I was a bloody mess that I went to the emergency room. Got another Prednisone prescription and another steroid pack. The prescriptions helped tremendously. Once the treatment stopped, the rash re-appeared. I have rashes on my neck, ears, stomach, back, tops of thighs, shoulders, arms and one hand… The hair product I used was the same one that I used over the past year prior to getting this PPD allergy. The original boxes I still have do not have the hair dye allergy warnings on them…I had no idea that PPD allergy was so wide spread until I got it….. The ingredient, para-phenylenediamine PPD should be illegal or banned. It has already been banned in some parts of Europe.

I need help. Thank you for reading this.”

In addition to giving you an understanding of just how real chemical dye allergy is, I also wanted to share the following with any and all sufferers:

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!
I can't say that enough.  I have spent the last 10 years wishing there was a product that could do what yours has just done for me.  After giving birth to my first child my body chemistry changed and I began many years of severe allergic reactions to over the counter hair dyes, Yet I continued to use them any which way I could.  I won't even tell you some of the things I'd attempted to not be gray.  I began getting gray in my early twenties and was horrified when I first learned I could not use the over the counter products any longer.  I had given in to the fact I would have to grow old gracefully, at least my hair would.  But now, WOW,

I just tried your product tonight and I can't even begin to tell you how happy I am!!!! I will need another application but I am so pleased with what I am seeing now I have no doubt it can only get better from here.  I look 10 years younger, my 40's look is now my new 30's look.  I am so pleased with your product I have just ordered 5 more! and will continue to order monthly. I never want to run out of your magic.  I will spread the word.  As soon as my family and friends see me they will want to order asap.  Hmmmmm, Maybe I won’t tell them right away, they ribbed me for years about the gray, just kidding they'll be buying real soon too I'm sure.

Much Appreciation
Cathy in North Port, FL

The Power of the Flower: Want a Real Hair Growth and Hair Care “Secret” That Grows on Trees?

Acacia concinna flower Acacia concinna is also known as Shikakai or Satla has been used in the Indian Subcontinent since ancient times for hair care. In fact, it is one of the Ayurvedic medicinal plants. Acacia concinna* extracts are used in natural shampoos or hair powders and the tree is now grown commercially in India and Far East Asia. Leaves are double-pinnate, containing a cluster of 2 or 3 stalked rounded pink flower heads. Flower heads about 1 cm in diameter when mature. Pods are thick, somewhat flattened, stalked, 8 cm long, 1.5-1.8 cm wide.

The bark contains high levels of saponins, which are foaming agents that are found in several other plant species. Saponin-containing plants have a long history of use as mild cleaning agents. To prepare it in the fruit pods, leaves and bark of Acacia concinna are dried, powdered and made into a paste.

It’s known as, “fruit for hair” and is used as a mild cleansing shampoo in India
. While it doesn’t produce the amount of lather a sulfate-containing shampoo would, it is an excellent cleanser for the hair. It’s very mild with a naturally low pH.  It doesn’t strip hair of natural oils and it also acts as a detangler, so usually it doesn’t need to be followed up with a conditioner. However, traditionally, prior to washing the hair, user massages the scalp with coconut oil or castor oil.

Loyal Customer-Krista loves Lustrous Henna!
Acacia concinna
is also known to promote hair growth by nourishing the scalp at the glandular level. It also can strengthen hair roots. (This is good news for anybody transitioning from a chemical perm or relaxer to natural hair). It is rich in vitamin C and vitamin D, along with other nutrients that nourish the hair follicles and promote hair growth. It can be used by itself or mixed with other natural ingredients in powder form, along with water to form a paste that is then applied to the hair.

Lustrous Henna® contains acacia concinna along with other natural plants and herbs used since ancient times. It is a superior henna that not only colors your hair, it actually nourishes your hair with fruit for hair –that grows on trees!

Hi Syed,
I just want to drop you a line to let you know that I have received only excellent and positive feedback from customers concerning the use of the Lustrous Herbal/Henna powders for their hair.  As we discussed, I obtained very good results when I tested the various colors.  However, the true test is customer satisfaction level.  I am pleased to say that my customers are extremely satisfied with the coloring capacity of the herbal/henna powders and the conditioning they obtain as well.
I am always looking for a better product to offer to my customers.  So when testing samples of Lustrous Herbal/Henna Powder provided results superior to those obtained with my previous brand of herbal/henna powder, we have switched the brand we offer our customers from our former brand to Lustrous Henna.

Thank you for providing such a reliable and excellent product that will allow men and women to color and condition their hair safely and naturally.  While all of the Lustrous colors provide great color coverage, it is the browns and blacks that tend to absolutely outperform the competition in terms of providing true browns and realistic blacks.  This is welcome news to people with dark hair who have wanted to use henna products but kept getting red results rather than true browns and black.  These are a keeper.
Kindest Regards,
Maureen J.

Hair Dye and Smoking. British Medical Journal Report Findings.

Hair dye and smoking linked to progressive liver disease
Smoking is NOT healthy.
“Case-control studies of risk factors for primary biliary cirrhosis in 2 United Kingdom populations.
Hair dye and smoking both increase the risk of progressive liver disease, suggests research involving around 5000 people published in the journal Gut.

Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), which is an early form of liver cirrhosis, is a long term progressive autoimmune disease, in which environmental factors are thought to play a part. It causes the liver's plumbing system of bile ducts to become inflamed, scarred, and blocked, leading to extensive tissue damage and irreversible, and ultimately fatal, liver cirrhosis.

The authors base their findings on two series of patients, one of which included 318 out of 381 new cases of PBC arising between 1997 and 2003 in the North East of England. The other series included 2258 out of 3217 members of the United Kingdom PBC Foundation, a national support group for people with the condition.  Finally, 2438 out of 3933 people randomly selected from the electoral roll, and matched for age and sex, were used as a comparison group.

All three groups were sent detailed questionnaires on potential environmental and genetic risk factors associated with PBC. As expected, autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid and coeliac diseases were all more common among those with PBC. And those with a family history of autoimmune disease were more likely to have PBC. The skin condition psoriasis, urinary infections, and shingles also significantly increased the likelihood of a PBC diagnosis.

Compared to those selected from the electoral roll, both series of patients were 63% more likely to have smoked at some point in their lives, and to have started smoking before their diagnosis. But patients with PBC were less likely to drink alcohol regularly, although this finding was not statistically significant. Previous research has indicated that alcohol is very unlikely to be a causative factor in PBC.

Less than 1% of male respondents used hair dye, whereas half of all the women surveyed did. When this was investigated among women only, those in the PBC support group were 37% more likely to develop PBC than women in the comparison group. Respondents were not asked how often they dyed their hair, and it is not clear which component of hair dye might be responsible for this finding, say the authors. But previous research has indicated an association between PBC and chemicals found in cosmetics, particularly octynoic acid, which is used in hair dye and nail polish, they add.”

STOP & THINK! then CHANGE.
Why take unnecessary risks with your health?
If you smoke: Quit. If you use permanent chemical dyes to color your hair: Quit, then CHANGE.

Thank You for your wonderful product. After trying many other natural hair dyes, yours was hands down the BEST. Your henna leaves my hair beautiful, shiny, healthier, and full of gorgeous natural looking highlights.
(Personal experience): I did notice that (for me) it helps immensely to wash with clarifying shampoo before using the henna and then to avoid any conditioner application so that the henna goes straight onto the hair without any barriers. When I used conditioner before the application, the henna washed out quickly. However, when I have nothing on my hair and apply the henna, it lasts for 3-4 weeks looking fabulous.
Thanks again! I will be a customer for life! Thanks so much!

CHEMICAL HAIR DYE: Process and Allergic Reaction

Mixing chemical dye Commercial hair dye product typically comes in two bottles: the one with PPD based dye (non-oxidized and thus colorless) and the other with oxidizer or developer, usually hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). In the hair dying process initially the peroxide is used to break down the natural hair pigment melanin, and then the PPD is used to replace melanin. When PPD reacts with peroxide, it becomes partly oxidized and colored — it is this form which can cause mild to severe allergy.

In France, Germany and Sweden, PPD was banned as a hair dye because it was thought to be too dangerous for health

ParaPhenylenediamine (PPD)
Application of chemical hair dye
“PPD is widely present on the market since 1909, and it is still used in over 2/3 of permanent hair dyes. A coal tar dye with links to bladder cancer, recognized as the most hazardous chemical used in hair dyes; can be absorbed through the skin and causes chemical leukoderma; potential gastrointestinal or liver toxicity hazards; mutagenic; can cause redness, pain and swelling of the eyelids, blurred vision and blindness; sense organ toxicity hazards; can form carcinogenic nitrosamine compounds if mixed with amines; potential kidney and respiratory toxicity hazards; potential to cause immune system response resulting in lung sensitization and other damage to immune system; can cause asthma attacks; poses neurotoxicity hazards; pharynx and larynx irritation; and anaphylactic shock which can be fatal.

The most common allergic reactions to PPD are dermatitis of the eyes, ears, scalp and face, which may include a rash, extreme swelling and a severe burning sensation on the scalp. Other names and related compounds include: PPDA; Phenylenediamine base; p-Phenylenediamine; 4-Phenylenediamine; 1,4-Phenylenediamine; 4-Benzenediamine; 1,4-Benzenediamine; para-Diaminobenzene (p-Diaminobenzene); para-Aminoaniline (p-Aminoaniline); Orsin; Rodol; or Ursol; Para-Touline Diamine; and Touline Diamine-Sulfate.”*

This compound is used in almost every hair dye on the market, regardless of brand. Avoid Chemical Hair Dye
Some of the so-called "natural" and "herbal" hair colors, while ammonia-free, contain PPD. Some products sold as “henna” also contain PPD added, particularly so-called "black henna." In many cases, PPD causes allergic reaction, and can cause scarring in some people. PPD should never be applied directly to the skin in its pure form or mixed with anything else.*

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists PPD as being a contact allergen. Exposure routes are through inhalation, skin absorption, ingestion, and skin and/or eye contact; symptoms of exposure include throat irritation (pharynx and larynx), bronchial asthma, and sensitization dermatitis.

It was voted “Allergen of the Year” in 2006 by the American Contact Dermatitis Society.

Dear Syed,

Last week during a phone conversation, you helped me choose the proper color of "Lustrous Henna". I received it in a very timely manner and applied it last night.  This was the first time I attempted to color my hair myself and was very nervous:)...however, I am very happy to say that I'm THRILLED with the results!!!  While I was about 40% gray, I got great coverage and am confident that another application next week will take care of the few remaining gray hairs:)  The color is so natural looking, and the highlights that run throughout my hair are very pretty.

Thank you so much for your help and kindness when we spoke, it was very much appreciated. I know I'll be a customer of "Lustrous Henna" for many years to come, and will definitely spread the word to friends and family members!

Sincerely,
Rosalie

Need an Image Boost? Love the Natural YOU & Your Hair!

Shakira-Dancing-with-the-stars1-300x160 Did you know that singer Shakira at one time hated the way she looked? She hated her naturally curly hair and even those curvy hips that she is now famous for. As incredible as it may seem, she actually needed therapy to boost her self-esteem. She finally learned to accept herself and her body and most of all: herself. She felt that the therapy was “incredibly liberating”.

The singer told the News of the World that she was unhappy with her body throughout her 20s and ended up seeing a therapist to feel more confident. She said: "All through my twenties I spent more time worrying what I didn't have than thinking about what I did have… I wished I was taller, had longer legs, slimmer hips, a smaller bottom, even straighter hair", she added. "I'm just like all women – we're born to criticize ourselves."

If you have viewed Shakira’s performance on “Dancing With the Stars” or anywhere else, you will no doubt agree that she is indeed an “Incredibly liberating” example for women (needless to say, most men would agree with that)!

Loving the natural YOU is very liberating.
Love your natural hair!
Loving your natural hair can also be a liberating experience. Need a true image boost? Need a new style? Want to cover those pesky gray hairs?
Visit a good stylist who is skilled enough to style your hair to enhance your facial features. One who knows that it’s more beneficial to bring out your natural highlights, using an all-natural vegetable-based, herbal hair color dye.

Lustrous Henna® can be included in your “liberating experience!
Lustrous henna pkg ================================================================
Your henna is the best I have ever used in 10 years of searching for a natural hair coloring product. Your henna is very clean of debris, leaves and sand, because it is so finely sifted. It colors my resistant gray hairs very well. I love how smooth like pudding your henna becomes once it is mixed with water. (Other henna products that I have used in the past became like dried mud when I applied it to my hair and they are very messy!)
I also love how fast I can use your henna after I mix it with water, and I don't have to leave it on my hair for 4 hours for it to color my gray. After only 60 minutes my gray is colored!
Also my curly, kinky hair is becoming SOFTER AND SMOOTHER!!! I can straighten my hair to a silky like texture that I never achieved before, without a chemical relaxer. Now I don't have to use harmful chemical relaxers, or harmful hair dyes!
Your company also ships the henna when you say you will, in a timely manner, and I receive my products very promptly. I always had to call in the past and complain to other henna companies about where my order was.
Keep up the excellent products, and the excellent work and THANKS A MILLION!!!

Teens: Want to Dye Your Hair & Make A Style Statement? Do it Naturally.

http://www.sababotanical.com 3 Reasons why I want to color my hair:
I want to be myself and dying my hair makes me feel like an individual.

I want to make my own personal style statement.

My friends are doing it and look hot, so what’s wrong with that?
    Nothing, really.

Make a statement! I want to share a couple of things with you that will help you think about HOW to make your hair statement.

Instead of going the “permanent chemical color” route, have you thought about bringing out your own natural highlights? That’s right. Your own highlights not only make your best style statement –they'll make you look very hot! The good news is that you don’t have to take a chance with your health either –if you go natural. Using an all-natural plant-based hair color dye in a variety of shade choices will help you create a personal style you will be proud to rock.
Ahem…now on a more serious note-
Please read the report below and think of the potentially serious allergies and other consequences that can occur with increased use of permanent chemical hair dyes.

    Allergy to hair dye increasing

“Allergic reactions to hair dye are increasing as more and younger people dye their hair, warn researchers.
This can lead to dermatitis on the face and, in severe cases, facial swelling may occur.
More than two thirds of hair dyes currently contain para-phenylenediamine (PPD) and other related agents. During the 20th century, allergic reactions to PPD became such a serious problem that it was banned from hair dyes in Germany, France, and Sweden.
Market research also indicates that more people are dying their hair and are doing so at a younger age… Severe hair dye reactions among children have also recently been reported.
‘Wider debate on the safety and composition of hair dyes is overdue’, say the authors. Cultural and commercial pressures to dye hair are putting people at risk and increasing the burden on health services.
It may not be easy to reverse these trends, however, as some patients have continued to use such dyes even when advised that they are allergic to them and risk severe reactions, they conclude.”
Why risk your health when who you REALLY want be is YOU? Naturally.
    So go ahead.
    Go Natural with Lustrous Henna.
Make your personal hair and style statement with Lustrous Henna®.

Gia_al_Qamar_Showcase As an performer, it is essential that my hair always looks it best.
As a woman, it is even more important that my hair stays healthy and beautiful.
I recently developed an allergy to 'traditional' chemical hair dyes and read that fellow Middle Eastern (Belly) Dancers followed in the footsteps of Cleopatra and treated their hair with henna.
    And so I did.
    And I was amazed!
Not only did the beautiful henna from Saba Botanical give me the color promised, it also brought my chemically treated, dried, lifeless hair back to health!
No longer stiff and lifeless, my silky hair now shimmers in the light with low and high lights beaming through the rich color.
Thank you SO much for a wonderful product that makes me healthier and my hair more beautiful!

“Today, I’m Going to Damage My Hair with Chemical Hair Dye!”

Okay, we know that the above statement is absurd. Totally ridiculous.
However,  for a number of users, the consequences of using chemical hair dye are definitely serious. No one wants an allergic skin reaction to synthetic hair dyes. Yet, most individuals are unaware of the extent of harm that can be caused.

To understand why our hair, scalp and skin become damaged, it’s important to learn a little something about: our hair.
Human hair is a protein fiber made of two layers. The inner layer called the cortex contains melanin. Melanin is a pigment that gives your hair shades of blonde, black, auburn or brown. The cortex is covered by another layer called the cuticle. The cuticle provides protection to the cortex and luster to your hair. The cuticle is inert in nature, so it cannot biologically or chemically absorb any color.
    Hair loss
Why can hair loss occur after using permanent hair dyes?
Permanent hair dye penetrates the cuticle of the hair, damaging it. The hair is exposed to para-phenylenediamine (PPD), hydrogen peroxide, ammonia and other harsh chemicals, causing overlapping of cuticular seates to lift from the hair cortex, thereby leading to rapid loss of amino acid. By removing the proteins that build the structural strength, the hair shaft is weakened with every application. The chemical damage results in an easily fractured hair shaft and eventual hair loss.

    Healthy Hair
Save your hair and keep it healthy and strong.

Dermatologists recommend using a 100% natural plant-based dye, (like Lustrous Henna®). Pure henna colors your hair by coating the hair shaft. It provides thickness to hair and bonds as a semi-permanent color. The next application reinforces this effect and results in increased strength and shine for healthier hair.

Krista Hi, my name is Krista and I just wanted to share my experience with using Lustrous Henna.

I have naturally curly fine hair that is now 40% gray.  I had been dying my hair with the traditional dyes for years.  Last year my hair was severely damaged by having a professional put a color remover on my hair to remove old, too dark dye. After the application, my hair was what they call "bubble gum" hair in the industry.  It was like rubber when wet and snapped off when it was dry.  I was told that there was no cure for this and I would just have to cut it all off and that I couldn't use any chemicals on it.
I was searching the internet for a protein treatment that would strengthen my hair.  When I read about the conditioning properties of henna and it colored the gray without chemicals,  I placed an order that day. My before and after picture speak for themselves but let me just tell you more.  After using the Lustrous Henna just one time, my hair was softer and shinier than before it was damaged.  It took about 2 months and 2 more applications of the Lustrous Henna and not blow drying my hair, the breakage stopped.  I work in a spa and the hairstylists that told me I would have to cut it off couldn't believe the recovery my hair made.
Here are some other benefits I have noticed since using your product.  My hair started sprouting new growth all over my scalp!  My hair is twice as thick (the hair bands I use prove it) as before.  My hair is naturally curly and it is much easier to blow dry straight now.  I had used red dyes before, but they never looked like a natural red, it faded fast and every hair was the same color, not to mention I was putting awful chemicals on my head!
I just love the multi-tonal highlights that the Lustrous Henna gives my hair.  The streaks in my hair in the picture are not bleached highlights, that is my natural color showing through.  I use the Lustrous Henna Red on the roots of my hair and the natural henna on the rest of my hair to give it depth and to look naturally sun bleached like a child's hair.  I would also like to mention that I have gotten wonderful customer service from Saba Botanical.  I have spoken to Syed on the phone for advice on colors and application and he is a wonderful, knowlegeable person.  My orders have arrived in the mail the same week I ordered them.
Thank You for saving my hair with your wonderful product.  I will be a loyal customer for years to come.
    Krista B. from Missouri, U.S.A.
    P.S.
I guess what I should have said.  My hair is still very naturally curly, always has been, but I blow dry it straight and use a chi straightening iron.  Using the henna has made it much easier to blow dry straight.  I wear it both curly and straight or curl it in big loose wings with a curling iron.  That's one of the points I was trying to convey to customers with naturally curly hair in that the henna makes it a lot easier to straighten it.
